Songfacts®:

  • An early song from The Vines, "Highly Evolved" was written by their lead singer, Craig Nicholls. He was brimming with confidence long before they signed a record deal; the song reflects his wild optimism and enthusiasm; he seemed to manifest the band's rise as they were hailed as rock revivalists in 2002.
  • The Vines included this song on a demo they made in 2001 that earned them a deal with the Australian label Engine Room, which sent them to America to make their debut album with producer Rob Schnapf, whose other clients include Foo Fighters and Beck.

During session for the album, the band started to fracture, and drummer David Olliffe bailed. By the time the album was released, they had a new drummer, Hamish Rosser.
  • Running just 1:35, "Highly Evolved" is the title track and first song on The Vines' debut album. The group is from Australia but were influenced by American grunge music, particularly Nirvana. The song was issued as a single in the UK and went to #32. In America, their first single was "Get Free," their best known song.
  • The Vines evolved into essentially a Craig Nicholls solo project when the last original member, bass player Patrick Matthews, left the band in 2004 after their second album, Winning Days. Nicholls, who writes their songs, was notoriously difficult to work with; it turned out he's neurodivergent, diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in 2004. That diagnosis brought new meaning to lyrics in this song like "My mind's a riddle that will never be solved."
