Songfacts®:

  • One of the more vulnerable songs on After Hours, this synth-pop jam finds The Weeknd addressing his romantic partner. He tells the female he can see in her eyes she's distressed despite her efforts not to show it.

You always try to hide the pain
You always know just what to say

In the second verse, The Weeknd reveals the cause of his lover's pain.

    I tried to find love
In someone else too many times

The Weeknd is feeling remorseful as he's been serially unfaithful to his girl. He tries to reassure her she is the only one for him.

But I hope you know I mean it
When I tell you you're the one that was on my mind
  • This is one of several tracks on After Hours that likely references The Weeknd's tumultuous relationship with model Bella Hadid. Other tracks believed to allude to their on-off romance include "Snowchild," "Scared to Live," "Save Your Tears," and "Hardest To Love."
  • The sax solo on the outro is played by Wojtek Goral. The Poland-born Swede has also played on recordings by Meghan Trainor, Justin Timberlake and Ariana Grande.
  • The Weekend co-wrote and co-produced the electro-pop tune alongside the Swedes Max Martin and Oscar Holter. Canadian rapper/singer Belly also contributed to the writing of the track.
  • The violent video continues the After Hours short film, which concluded with The Weeknd appearing to murder a couple in a secluded elevator. However, in the Anton Tammi-directed clip we learn that the woman, played by model Zaina Miuccia, survived the encounter. We see her being stalked by Abel before she fights back in a nightclub named After Hours.
  • Doja Cat both sings backing vocals and raps a verse on the remix, which was released May 21, 2020. During her verse, Doja continues the conversation from the point of view of The Weeknd's lover. She recognizes his self-destructive tendencies but is still into him.
  • The Weeknd dropped a second remix on October 16, 2020 featuring Kenny G, who contributes a few saxophone solos. The jazz saxophonist joined The Weeknd on stage four weeks earlier for his performance of "In Your Eyes" during the TIME100 primetime special.
