Songfacts®:

  • In this song, an author who writes tragedies one day sees all the characters he invents come back to life, and they come to his door angry for breaking their hearts in the plays he writes. They throw the red roses he gave them at his feet ("50 red roses falling apart in the hands of someone you scripted and left behind").
  • The line, "You're the broken heart, you're the sigh in the back of the throat, and on the other side you're the queen of spades, you're the sound that she makes on her way" is a reference to how he made his characters two-sided, sometimes brokenhearted, sometimes angry. >>>

  • Jeff from Cheektowaga, NyThis song has nothing to do with tragedies or characters coming to life. When I saw Thursday in concert Geoff actually said that this song is about bands that write love songs and how much he hates them because it seems like they are telling him what to do. Right before the song was played he said "This song goes out to the bands that write nothing but love song and will soon burn in hell for it." So yeah thats pretty much it! Thanks!
