  • "Standing Room Only" is a soaring, emotional anthem that encourages us to embrace the present moment and live life to the fullest. It serves as a powerful reminder to appreciate what we have and not take anything for granted, while also emphasizing the importance of being there for others and giving back to our communities.
  • The title comes from the idea of living life in such a manner that one's funeral would be "a standing room only" affair attended by people whose lives had been greatly influenced and left a lasting impression.

"To me, it's all about life of affirmation, you know, being the best you, you could be," McGraw shared with Taste of Country Nights host Evan Paul. "We fail miserably every single day when we get out of bed - I probably fail the first step I take. I fail by doing something wrong."

"The best thing you can do is try to wake up the next day, do the next best thing," he added. "And I think that's what this song sort of says to me."
  • Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, McGraw's longtime friend and collaborator Craig Wiseman teamed up with songwriter Tommy Cecil ("Home Alone Tonight," "I Was Jack (You Were Diane)") and Patrick Murphy, a singer-songwriter-pianist signed to Warner Music Nashville, to write "Standing Room Only" over Zoom in April 2020. The trio created the song in Music Row's new era of online collaboration, just a month into the pandemic.

As soon as McGraw heard their demo, its profound and meaningful lyrics resonated. "Every word means something and every phrase means something," he said. "There's not a wasted line or a lyric anywhere in this song."

"And to have sort of the valid mentality to still have an up-tempo sort of energetic feel to it," McGraw added. "It's hard to find the combination of those kinds of songs, and when you find one like that, you just hope you can get in the studio and you can pull off what you have in your head."
  • "Standing Room Only" feels like a thoughtful companion piece to McGraw's trademark hits "Where The Green Grass Grows" and "Live Like You Were Dying," both of which also spelled out what's really important in life. Craig Wiseman co-wrote those two previous #1 hits too.
  • McGraw had a hand in producing the track, helming it alongside Byron Gallimore. The driving force of their smooth, semi-symphonic production is the interplay between the piano and electric guitar, creating a dynamic musical landscape.
  • Released on March 10, 2023, "Standing Room Only" serves as the lead single and title track off McGraw's 17th studio album.
  • Tommy Cecil pitched the concept of "Standing Room Only" with a twist that he drew from a movie. "When he dies, at his funeral, everybody will be standing. It'll be so packed that there will only be standing room," he explained.

The idea clicked instantly with Craig Wiseman, who spontaneously belted out the opening lines of the chorus:

I wanna live a life, live a life
Like a dollar and the clock on the wall don't own me

Wiseman, Cecil and Murphy then crafted a song that emphasizes the value of character over material possessions and encourages the spread of hope rather than the accumulation of power.

"It's just a song about treating everybody, in my opinion, the way that you want to be treated," Murphy told Billboard. "Be kind to every single person that you come into contact with each day because you have no idea what that person's going through."
