This modern murder ballad was written by lyricist Peter Callendar (1939-2014) and composer Mitch Murray. Recorded by Tony Christie on MCA, it was arranged by Lew Warburton and backed by "Give Me Your Love Again." In the US it was released on the Kapp label.
This was the breakthrough single for Christie, and aside from the belated success of "(Is This The Way To) Amarillo" was as good as things ever got for him.

The Prince-penned "Manic Monday" was the first song The Bangles heard coming from a car radio, but "Eternal Flame" is closest to Susanna's heart, perhaps because she sang it in "various states of undress."
