Songfacts®:

  • In this troubled world, we sometimes need some help from the heavens to make our way. In this song, lead singer Pat Monahan is calling his angels for guidance.

The song was inspired by something his therapist, Judy Bell, told him. As Monahan recounted to Buzzfeed, she said: "Just remember that we are made up of angels and traitors, and the angel is the one that says, 'You're beautiful and you can do anything you want,' and the traitor is the one that says, 'You're ugly and you can't get anything right.'"

"That song just came from that conversation of, if we all called our angels, what a cool life this would be for all of us," he said.
  • "Calling All Angels" was the lead single from Train's third album, My Private Nation, the follow-up to Drops Of Jupiter. It was a solid pop hit and topped the Adult Contemporary chart, their first #1 on that tally.

It was their last substantial hit until 2009, when they got back on track with "Hey Soul Sister."
  • Directed by Shaun Peterson, the music video shows Train performing while composited over a surreal animated landscape. The special effects didn't age very well.
  • The line "football teams are kissing queens" relates to how the royal family is revered in the UK and treated like, well, royalty, at soccer matches. It seemed strange to him that working class folks would think so highly of royals for the sake of tradition.
  • This song pairs well with the Calling All Angels Chardonnay, produced by Train's Save Me San Francisco Wine Company.
