Songfacts®:

  • This country-style duet between Vampire Weekend singer Ezra Koenig and Danielle Haim plays out the story of a couple looking back at the better times of their relationship.

Shared a moment in a café
Shared a kiss in pouring rain
We got married in a gold rush
And the sight of gold will always bring me pain

The couple got married when everything in their lives together seemed golden. However, gold is a heavy metal and now their relationship is soured, the pair are sharing a heavy burden.
  • Danielle Haim is the girlfriend of Father of the Bride producer Ariel Rechtshaid. This song is one of a trio of country-folk ballads on the album to which she contributes vocals. Koenig told The Sun:

"I like the idea that if you are going to work with someone, then you already know them - or you really get to know them and it's not just one day in the studio.

Danielle lived upstairs from where me and Ariel were recording, so it was easy to get her involved. I knew I wanted to have some duets on the album and in terms of songwriting, they were clearly indebted to Sixties and Seventies country duets.

For a long time, I wanted the perfect country singer to duet with and I went pretty far down the line with some people. But I just couldn't bring myself to submit songs to somebody I didn't know."
