Victoria Monét Artistfacts

  • May 1, 1989
  • Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Victoria Monét later moved to Sacramento, California, during her childhood. Her family background includes her mother, L'Tanya Chestang-Cubit, and maternal grandmother, Cassaundria Lovett, originally from Mobile, Alabama.
  • Monét attended Sheldon High School in Sacramento, where she joined the performing arts program after convincing her mother to change their address.
  • Monét discovered Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins on Myspace and reached out to him. He invited her to Los Angeles to audition for a girl group he was forming called Purple Reign. Motown Records signed the group, but they got dropped before releasing any music.
  • After Purple Reign's demise, Monét penned songs for other artists while chasing her own music dreams. Her first placement was "I Hate That You Love Me," a track for Diddy Dirty Money's 2010 album, Last Train to Paris.
  • When Atlantic Records' CEO Craig Kallman heard one of her demos he offered her a record deal on the spot. Atlantic released her debut EP, Nightmares & Lullabies: Act 1, on October 30, 2014.
  • It was Monét's songwriting that paid the bills in those early days, writing for artists like Ariana Grande, Fifth Harmony and T.I.
  • The Yours Truly track "Honeymoon Avenue" was the first of many collaborations between Ariana Grande and Monét. The pair are close friends and have co-written some of Grande's biggest hits, including "Thank U, Next" and "7 Rings." Monét has also opened for Grande on tour and appeared in several of her music videos.
  • In an interview with Gay Times in January 2020, Victoria Monét said she had fallen in love with a girl even though she had a boyfriend at the time. Monét didn't name the woman in question, but fans believe it was Kehlani. Kehlani and Monét have been friends for many years and have collaborated on several songs together.
