Songfacts®:

  • "Demonic Depression" is about sadness that gets so bad it feels like supernatural possession. The song focuses on the downward spiral of self-isolation that many depressed people find themselves on. It stresses the importance of reaching out for help before things become irreversible.

"In between the lines, there were certain things I've been struggling with myself," Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen said. "So lyrically, it's a strong lyric where I just take it a little to the edge, where the pressure becomes a demonic thing, where at the very end you pretty much self-created the demon in you, and things just get worse and worse until you find someone to talk to and get some help."
  • Poulsen initially wrote the song for his death metal band, Asinhell. When the chorus came to him, it felt like a Volbeat chorus, so he switched it over.
  • Poulsen wrote "Demonic Depression" about a particular friend of his, though he never shared their name. He told Apple Music, "It's funny - maybe six or seven of my friends asked me if this song was about them because they really connected with it. But the friend I actually wrote it about called me and just said, 'Great f--king song, man!'"

The experience opened Poulsen's eyes to how many people are dealing with depression.
  • As with all of God of Angels Trust, Volbeat's ninth studio album, "Demonic Depression" was recorded very fast. The whole album was done in just 13 days, the fastest-ever recording time for the band. The speed of the recording gave the song urgency and energy.
  • This song gave Volbeat their 13th #1 hit on Billboard's Mainstream Rock songs chart. That's the most for any artist outside North America (Volbeat are from Denmark).
  • The band went in with the idea of the song, but once they played, they treated it like a live performance. The band members relied on instinct and intuition to give the song a visceral presence.
  • Some new listeners were surprised at the heaviness of "Demonic Depression," which contrasts with the softer and more melodic feel of God of Angels Trust, but Poulsen actually started in the world of death metal. He formed Volbeat in 2001 after becoming tired of the death metal scene.
