  • On "Love Is All Around," Wet Wet Wet transform Reg Presley's 1967 original for The Troggs into a sweeping, orchestral pop ballad tailored for the '90s. While the original version frames love as a broad, universal spiritual force, Wet Wet Wet lean heavily into pure romance.
  • Presley's lyrics revolve around the idea that love is everywhere; "written on the wind" and present "everywhere I go." The title phrase captures the song's central metaphor: love isn't something the singer simply feels; it's a force surrounding his entire existence.

"I was living just off Oxford Street and it was a Sunday and I had eaten my lunch and I was feeling good," Presley recalled in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh. "A Salvation Army band called The Joy Strings were on TV. They were banging their tambourines and singing about love and that gave me the idea for 'Love Is All Around.' I picked up my bass and started working on it. I wrote it within 20 minutes, probably the fastest song I ever wrote."
  • When Richard Curtis, the writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral, approached Wet Wet Wet about recording a song for the film's soundtrack, the band were offered three choices: Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," Barry Manilow's "Can't Smile Without You," or "Love Is All Around." They chose the Troggs song because the band felt they could put their own stamp on Presley's composition.

Wet Wet Wet slowed the song down, added their trademark soulful warmth and created a more polished arrangement, complete with a new introduction. Released in May 1994 to coincide with the film, the track became inseparable from the movie's romantic atmosphere.
  • This was the biggest-selling UK single of 1994, spending 15 consecutive weeks at #1 on the UK Singles Chart. It came close to matching Bryan Adams' 16-week record run with "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You," but the band eventually grew tired of hearing their own song everywhere and asked their record company to remove the single from sale. This allowed Whigfield's "Saturday Night" to take the top spot.
  • Despite the unusual decision to cut short a record-breaking run, "Love Is All Around" remained a landmark achievement. Wet Wet Wet held the record for the longest #1 run by a UK-based act until 2026, when Sam Fender and Olivia Dean's "Rein Me In" reached a 16th week at the summit.
  • The song's impact was more limited in America, where it peaked at #41 on the Billboard Hot 100, but in Britain it became a cultural landmark, one of those songs that seem to exist permanently in the background of wedding receptions, romantic montages and radio playlists.
  • The music video, directed by Marcus Nispel and filmed in New York City, reflects the song's universal message by mixing footage of the band performing with images of the city around them. The urban setting goes with the lyrical idea that love could be found "everywhere I go," suggesting that romance was not confined to grand gestures but could be hiding around any corner.
  • Wet Wet Wet were already a major UK chart force by the time their cover of "Love Is All Around" arrived in 1994. It was their seventh Top 10 hit in Britain, part of a run that ultimately gave them 13 UK Top 10s and 27 Top 40 entries between 1987 and 1997.
