Songfacts®:

  • This song tells the story of Anna, who wastes her days working for money that she doesn't have time to spend. Butler based the character on West Side Story's Puerto Rican immigrant Anita, who sings of her love for America.
  • The song's music video was filmed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, and directed by Brantley Gutierrez. The nautical clip, which features the actress Emma Stone dancing around the ship with a cast of sailors was choreographed by Ryan Heffington, who previously worked on Sia's "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart" visuals. It is loosely based on the Lady In White ghost legend.

Stone's on-off boyfriend Andrew Garfield starred in Arcade Fire's 2013 "We Exist" music video.
