Songfacts®:

  • In a Songfacts interview with Wintersleep lead singer Paul Murphy, he said that "Amerika" is about "trying to live through struggle," especially in uncertain times. It was released months before Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, which spurred interest in the song. "It feels like it has gotten a bit darker or something," Murphy said. "It definitely feels like a relevant song for the times right now."
  • Wintersleep is a Canadian band. The title and some of the lyrics are based on the Walt Whitman poem America, which Murphy was reading. In Whitman's poem, he wrote:

Perennial with the Earth, with Freedom, Law and Love
