Songfacts®:

  • Yahritza Y Su Esencia is a Mexican-American family band from Washington's Yakima Valley. The trio comprises singer Yahritza Martinez, Armando "Mando" Martinez on guitar, and Jairo Martinez on bass. Their name translates as Yahritza And Her Essence.

Yahritza Y Su Esencia released their debut single, "Soy El Unico," on March 25, 2022. The heart-rending song finds Yahritza expressing her love for an ex; "Soy El Unico" means "I'm the Only One."
  • Yahritza Martinez wrote the song. She penned it from a male perspective, channeling a breakup she'd seen Jairo go through.
  • Yahritza was just 14 when she wrote "Soy El Unico." It's the first song she ever wrote.

She showed it to Jairo, who loved it and had her sing the tune to Mando. "When I first heard her singing it, I was like, 'Oh she's singing a cover,'" Mando recalled to Rolling Stone. "Then when she shared it with me, I was like, 'That's your song?'"
  • "Soy El Unico" is a corrido tumbado song. The genre is a blend of traditional Mexican corridos and American trap music, pioneered by Natanael Cano in late 2010s. The Mexican rapper and singer-songwriter's first corrido tumbado, "Soy El Diablo," was later rereleased as a remix with Bad Bunny.
  • Following its release, this Spanish-language ballad immediately went viral on TikTok, resulting in it debuting on the Hot 100 at #20. At 15 years old, Yahritza became the youngest Latin performer to enter the chart.
