Songfacts®:

  • Yard Act is an English band from Leeds, Yorkshire, comprising vocalist James Smith, bassist Ryan Needham, guitarist Sam Shjipstone and drummer Jay Russell. This song is a track from their debut album, The Overload.
  • Smith sets the song at the end of a party when he doesn't want to let go of a good moment and instead wants to "pour another" one. "You know, it's sort of it's hard to give up in a good pie at that part in the party where everyone is with each other and everyone's feeling good," Smith told BBC Radio 1's Clara Amfo. "Those are the special times and we don't want to let go of them."
  • Musically, "Pour Another" is a Happy Mondays-inspired poppy tune, a departure from Yard Act's normal post-punk sound. Lyrically, it acts as a counterbalance to the anti-capitalist slant that runs through The Overload. "I wanted to write something that was a bit more spacious lyrically and had a bit more of a chorus," Smith told Apple Music. "And I just wanted to poke fun at the left-wing liberal hippy thing, after doing an album sticking the boot in. I wanted to give it both ways, really. I made fun of us a little bit in this song and had a bit of fun with that side of things."
  • Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Algiers) produced "Pour Another" along with the rest of the album. The band had to work hard at persuading him about this song's worth. "Ali didn't really like this one," said Smith. "He kept pushing it away, but we were adamant it was good and there was something in it."
