Songfacts®:

  • "Backwards" opens with Zach Bryan talking to his mother about an ex who betrayed him, before moving into a chorus about past lovers who seemed more interested in his money than in him.

His relationship with his wife is a completely different story. In the second half of the chorus, Bryan recalls falling in love with Samantha Leonard at La Concha Beach in San Sebastián, Spain. The pair later married in a private New Year's Eve ceremony on December 31, 2025. He sees her as real and genuine, framing her as the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

Bryan refuses to leave past heartbreaks unresolved. In the bridge, he chooses to forgive his former partner, following the example set by his father, who taught him to "always forgive."
  • The title's image of "walking backwards" captures the awkward process of confronting old mistakes and breaking bad habits. Bryan isn't looking back just to relive what went wrong; he is trying to understand his past well enough to avoid carrying its worst parts into the future. Moving forward, in this case, means retracing a few steps in the wrong direction to figure out how to get things right.
  • Bryan teased "Backwards" on YouTube on July 18, 2026, before deleting the post. He debuted the song live in Oregon later that month before releasing it on his EP Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs, where it anchors the record's themes of self-reflection alongside tracks like "Dog Days."

The EP cover reinforces that idea by showing Bryan shooting a doppelgänger. The image mirrors the concept of killing off an old version of yourself to start fresh, a pretty drastic approach to self-improvement, though certainly more visually striking than keeping a journal.
