• Steve G. from UkThe information about Paul Kossoff is completely wrong. Paul Kossoff died due to a heart Attack whilst on board an airliner flying across the Atlantic. If it had been today he probably would have made it because of portable defibrillators which can be carried on airplanes. It may be conjecture that drug use over a long period of time may, may have weekend his heart or caused heart disease , but, as this is mere speculation it is a fact that he did not die from a drug overdose...

• Mikenice from New York, NyPpl, whomever said it's definitely about Jimi- well, yes, Jimi is indeed included in this tragic, eery group of artists who were "shooting stars" literally stars who shot heroin & other hard drugs, figuratively, as the talent who died (too) young of either overdose directly or other excess related to the rockstar life. "Forever 27" as the list of them still continues to grow on... Still Jimi would have been 21 yrs old at the release of the Beatles love me do, also a dropout prior to age 17, not that it matters- but he definitely was not a schoolboy in 1963. He was collectively part of the group that Paul Rogers was writing about, and perhaps his writing was foreshadowing the death of band mate Paul Kossoff a year after the release... who knows for sure? Paul Rogers and probably at least a dozen people close to him & the band.
  As for Lee Bob from Minnesota- 1st off, the f**k is in Minnesota? Canada should just absorb that state as it pretty much is Canada. Surely not an American rock n roll fan to say that this song especially, let alone any of Bad Company's work is on that list of yours. That's what is truly dreadful. Who do you like? Rush? The Eagles? Foreigner? Wings? Yeah I thought so... you probably loved Hootie & The Blowfish too...
  Yuck.
  Bottom line- 'Shooting Star' is a powerful ballad with a nice combination of acoustic guitar, power cords on electric, harmonious vocals in the bridges & chorus- with haunting lyrics delivered by the exceptional vocals of Paul Rogers. As a musician, who wishes to remain anonymous- and as a recovering IV heroin addict- one who also OD'd at age 27, but lived to tell the tale (33 years clean & serene now) I can confirm that this song is especially touching to us. "Us" being the collective group of artists who are being warned in this song by someone who know too well and actually cared enough to write about it.

• Gtr from Us ATommy Bolin - maybe kossoff. Kossoff died of an embolism. Bolin died of a drug overdose, "A bottle of whiskey, sleeping tablets by his head." Maybe it was both, they both died about the same time.

Instead, it was a compilation of artists who had died before their time because of drugs, etc. If you're trying making exact references to some of the lyrics, Paul wrote "Johnny was a school boy when he heard his first Beatle song. Love Me Do, I think it was......" Hendrix was born in 1942 and Love Me Do was released in 1963, which would have made Hendrix 21 years of age. Not likely that Hendrix was a school boy at 21 years of age. Don't get caught up in trying to figure out who, specifically, Paul was writing about. Just know that he was referring to different rock stars in the aggregate, and enjoy the music.

I just saw Paul Rodgers last year 2019 touring with REO Speedwagon and they absolutely Rocked the House that night. They were amazing. These bands and singers are old now and I knew I might not get another chance to see them play. I love silver, blue and gold because.my rainbow is overdue. Paul Rodgers was.amazing. Bad Co. I love all their music and you guys are lo ed by soany..you were my x husband's favorite band and Journey... Now there's a voice nobody could match. Steve Perry..when I hear journey today on the radio it almost brings me to tears..mentally.im back in the late 70s. And memories of a world gone away. This world is so crazy and confused and violent I'm so grateful that I'm not young because the future of this.world is dying and it's heartbreaking.Thank you Paul for 40 years of driving in my truck rocking out to feel like making love...

• Don from TwoJust a Heads Up to Chris from WA. When you saw them with Damn Yankees, it wasn't Paul Rogers singing. Rogers left the band from 1982 - 1998. The Lead singer was most likely Brian Howe. Damn Yankees were popular in the early 90's and split around 1994... I saw this tour in RI, and it wasn't the lead singer who sang shooting star, it was the drummer, Simon Kirke. He came out from behind the drums, sat on a stool and played it. I bet they were worried that fans would be mad if the "new" singer sang Rogers signature tune, so they let an original member of Free and Bad Company sing it...Kirke. Thats probably why you got confused and thought it was "dedicated to the drummer" it WAS the drummer.

• Zach from Columbus, OhioI don't know any facts about the history of the song, but I also thought that it definitely had hendrix in mind because in the end he says something about hwaring him still play if you listen closely to the wind, after which there's a pretty short little lick that sounds a-la-hendrix, at least compared to the other lead parts in the song.
  
  I also was thinking that perhaps it is commentary about the idolization of of musicians who died young due to drug overdoses and perhaps a warning in a way. As a former junkie I don't mean this in any disparaging way to anyone who struggles with addiction but I believe this idea of the tragic rockstar has kind of become engrained in a lot of peoples minds, but from my experience and observations, most people who start using heroin end up selling their guitars, not achieving international fame.

  A wonderful song! Powerful lyrics, voice and music, what more could you ask for?

The song mentions a couple times that the world will love you as "long as you are a shooting star" kind of emphasizing the fall from "rock star" grace

There are millions of great bands that never got signed. Just because one guy in LA or Liverpool liked a band and decided to pay them money to record sounds, doesn't mean that they were the *only* band doing that at the time. Top 40 is not the measure of an era's music. An era's music is way too intensely humongous for any of us to judge thoroughly.

And rock was just a shooting star - by the time (1975) this song was released, rock's star was far on the decline. I love the line: "If you listen to the wind you can still hear him play." As in, you can still hear rock's remanents. It's like "Johnny B. Goode" and "Shooting Star" are the bookends of the period of great rock music.
