  • This vacation's useless
    These white pills aren't kind
I've given a lot of thought on this 13 hour drive
I miss the grinding concrete where we sat past 8 or 9
Slowly finished laughing in the glow of our headlights
I've given a lot of thought to the nights we used to have
The days have come and gone, our lives went by so fast
I faintly remember breathing on your bedroom floor
Where I laid and told you but you swear you loved me more

Do you care if I don't know what to say?
Will you sleep tonight or will you think of me?
Will I shake this off, pretend it's all okay
That there's someone out there who feels just like me
    There is

Those notes you wrote me, I've kept them all
I've given a lot of thought of how to write you back this fall
With every single letter, in every single word
There will be a hidden message about a boy that loves a girl

Do you care if I don't know what to say?
Will you sleep tonight or will you think of me?
Will I shake this off, pretend it's all okay
That there's someone out there who feels just like me
    There is

    (repeat 3x)

  • Jt Rufus from CotswoldsFor me it conjures up memories of lying on the bedroom floor of my teenage love, both getting hot and a bit sweaty. Our hearts thumping and whispering to each other as we kiss endlessly.
  • Aaron from Lubbock,txI see this song as a guy and a girl have broken up and now some time has passed. The guy is on a long drive and is remembering all the good times they had. He misses her more than anything but he doesn’t know how to get her back. He wonders if she feels the same way and also if anyone else feels the same type of heartache.
  • John from Chester, VaI think Arkady's from London interpretation is faulty. I think this song is about a couple slowly breaking apart and the guy is heartbroken. But he finds a little solace in the fact that THERE IS someone else in the world who is hurting because in the words of REM "everybody hurts "
  • Will from Wilmington, Nc, NcTom Delonge said that he always wanted to write a love song that is very true to not only his life but to others...he definetly hit a home run with this one, because I've been listening to this song for 7 years now...since I was in 3rd grade.
  • Sydney from Moami, Cai interpreted this as its about the girl and shes cheating on this guy and he knows it. so he drives to see her and he wonders if she still thinks of him and he knows someone feels like he does, because both the guys are in love with the girl. so when he writes her the letter trying to be romantic but its too late because she sent him a bunch of letters a while ago that he never responded too because he didnt know how to put his feelings into words so she moved on but he didnt. i thought it was a really great song because of the heartbreak, and it was so true.
  • Ashlee from New York, NyMan this is what I think, it's about a failed relationship. The guy still loves the girl but is hesitant. There was a time they were in love as explained in the 1st verse. They were never ust friends(for the people who say they were) "where I laid and told you but you sware you loved me more" He thinks of her day and night but is unsure whether she is doing the same, because she may have moved on and now There Is somewhere out there who feels just like him.

    OR.
Long distance relationship, he misses her and just wants to get back to her, hes miserable but it makes him feel better knowing that there is someone out there who feels justlike him. There Is.(itcould be his girlfriend or maybe even just someone else out there, going through the same thing). Tell me what you guys think.

Which one of my point of views make more sense?
  • Nadia from T-town, Njafter reading these i feel like i have to add my moneys worth.
i love this song.since me and my ex broke up I've been looking for that one song to tie it all together.
    this is it.
i think it's about a couple that decided to take a break
but in the end they break up.
the girl is looking for more and moves away.
but the boy still holds on
    like it's all he's got.
he's kept pictures, letters so he wouldn't lose his feelings for her
    so he'd always be reminded.
he still thinks of her every second of the day
hoping that in time she'll realize that she still has feelings for him
the same feelings he has for her
he's been depressed since she's been gone
having to take those "kind white pills"
but you can tell he's questioning if he's being pathetic or if his feeling are normal
"Do you care if I don't know what to say?
Will you sleep tonight or will you think of me?
Will I shake this off, pretend it's all okay"
I remember not being able to tell him how i felt when he put me on the spot.
i remember how I could tell it hurt him.
in effort I wrote him a letter
    explaing my insecurities.
    he claimed he loved it
but in the end he didn't understand me at all
    but he thought he did
    it broke my heart.
and yet I still have my feelings saved in a box
    just for him
    patientily waiting
and I wonder if I'm patheic
    or if it's normal
so anyways he's driving to see her
he has to tell her in person
bc when you write people letters
    love letters especially
they always always interpreate them differently.
believe me it hurts more than anything
    i still remember

  • Amanda from Th, Mnwell its very obvious what the song is about. it is about a guy who is in love...he's in love with his best friend. She is very beautiful, and the most amazing person he's ever met. But he's not sure if she loves him back, but he really hopes she does. Well now you realize she does or did. it's long past over if his vacation is useless and he's waited so long to write her back. i think it is very romantic...and tom is very hott(just saying) umm yeah pretty much it
  • Win_710 from Sydney, Australiau showed me this song, but u didnt show me much else, and now all i have to remeber u by, is this song. i jsut wanted to know,
Will you sleep tonight or will you think of me?
will i shake this off, pretend its all okay
That theres someone out there who feels just like me, There is
  • Amanda from Pickering, Canadai never thought i could pick a favorite song, until this one came out. Being it by basically my favorite band just makes it so much better. i think that any song can be about what you want it to be, people relate to things in different ways. personally i agree with the first comment, maybe being that i'm in a long distance relationship, i'm not sure. But me &him made this "our song" [as cliche as it might be]. He sung it to be &played it on guitar over the phone once, i don't think i've ever cried that much in my life. I can't express how much i relate to this song, it's like every emotion i have for my boyfriend put into words...which i really didn't think was possible. I used to think "will i shake this off, pretend it's all okay. that there's someone out there who feels just like me" meant someone else was in love with the girl, but that was just a forshadowed perspective i guess. The video really helps with the feeling of the song. Not to mention Tom singing in the rain& getting arrested adds to it. <3.
  • Hannah from Sydney, AustraliaThis song makes me think of someone, and it makes me cry.
  • Timmy from Lockport, NyOk, now that my silly interpretation is through, it's time for the real one. This song, unquestionably is about his ex-girlfriend who broke up with him and he still loves her. He just wasted an entire vacation on her, and now he's taking pills to keep from depression on his way home. He reminisces about the time they spent together and the things they did. It left him speechless, "not knowing what to say", will she think about what she did? how can she sleep knowing how she hurt him? will he shake her off and pretend it's all okay that she dumped him? and move on hoping that there's someone like him? he's going to write her this fall, probably a hate note, but there will be love in every word, you know, how you get mad at someone when they leave you cause you still love them... this is the song... you can't argue it... trust me.
  • Timmy from Lockport, NyThis song... is my life... everyone, i can see, has their own interpretation... lemme see if mine makes any sense to anyone... almost two years ago, i fell in love with, whom i think is, perfection... her name was caren... she never liked me too much tho... lol... i think of her when i play this song, and would like to play it for her on my guitar someday... we were supposed to go out on a date over the summer vacation last year, but it never happened... that "vacation's useless" cuz i never got to... the nights we used to work together (share), and we'd talk about stuff, nothing big, but it meant the world to me, now she's gone, it seems so long ago (the days have come and gone, our lives went by so fast) i never knew what to say, words fell short in her presence, she was amazing (do you care if i don't know what to say) and i could never fall asleep, i'd stay up hours writing about her and thinking of what i could say next time i saw her... did she do the same? (will you sleep tonight? will you think of me?) she told me that she just wanted to be friends, it broke my heart, i couldn't be friends(will i shake this off pretend it's all ok?)i felt so alone and like nobody cared, i thought she cared, but she obviously didn't (that there's someone out there who feels just like me?) i wrote her a christmas card (write you back this fall) later that year telling her how much i loved her (there will be a hidden message about a boy that loves a girl) she thought nothing special of it... oh well... and when i came across this song afterwards, it all just fell into place... and i would give anything in the world to have her sit and listen to me play this song for her... i'm sorry...
  • Rachel from Hull, Englandi love this song it is so beautiful and meaningful it makes me cry! it sounds stupid but if you really listen to the lyrics (that have been so greatly composed) u will feel the same!
  • Ben from Bristol, EnglandThis song is about a boy, who loves his best friend, who is a girl. But can't go out with her, so leaves, but that doesn't help. She trys to bring him back, he doesn't know what do. and is glad that he can get ovr it, but wishes he didn't have to.
  • Sarah from Quito, South Americawow, so much to say about this song. its so amazing. when i first heard it it wasnt that big of a deal to me. but then a while ago i was talking to my boyfriend and he suggested it as our song. then when he said that i took a deeper closer look to the words and for the first time it hit me as a love song. "this vacations useless"--i live in ecuador, my boyfriend lives in north carolina. its far away. its like...tom is saying that there is all this space in between them, they are so far away from each other, but its useless because he misses her so much and wants to be with her. "these white pills arent kind"--this to me could mean anti-depressants or just sleeping pills. either one, is not kind, anti depressants tell you you are screwed up and make you more depressed, but he could be taking them cuz she is gone. or sleeping pills because he cant sleep at night thinking of her. "ive given a lot of thought on this thirteen hour drive"--hes driving to see her, anticipating seeing her after time apart. "i miss the grinded concrete where we sat past eight or nine and slowly finished laughing in the glow of our head lights"--hes just remembering nights that they used to have, chiling, and having fun, skating, and laughing. "ive given a lot of thought to the nights we used to have"--basically all he can do on this long drive is think about her and they time they shared together before. "the days have come and gone, our lives went by so fast"--she is gone now and those thougts are only memories, people grow up and move, but he still loves her. "i faintly remember breathing on your bedroom floor"--this could be talking about after sex, or just laying on the bedroom floor together. not every couple has to have sex to be romantic, some people actually have respect for themselves and their boyfriend/girlfriend. "where i laid and told you but you swear you loved me more"--simply the obvious, they love each other, and he knows that she loved him, but the way tom sings these words, its almost painful. like he is amazed at the fact that someone would love him. "do you care if i dont know what to say?"--some people simply dont know what to say all the time, say the wrong thing, or just dont have much to say, but this doesnt mean they dont love you. "will you sleep tonight or will you think of me?"--hes been up late thinking about her all this time since she has been gone. does she think about him too, or has she moved on? "will i shake this off, pretend its all ok"--will he shake off the feelings that he has that maybe she has moved on, and to be simply mr. brightside (i stole that from the killers, i know). to keep his mind set that she hasnt moved on, that she still loves him too. he would be pretending that its all ok, because she is so amazing, and he cant see why she would still love him over all this time. "that there's someone out there who feels just like me"--hes asking, wondering if she still loves him and feels these thoughts of anxiety running through her head. is she thinking about him? does she want to know if he still loves her? is she staying up late cuz he is all she can think about? are all these feelings that he has described in the chorus what she is feeling too? "there is"--so she does feel the same. he knows she loves him and feels all those things too. such a line of hope. "those notes you wrote me, i kept them all"--people dont refer to them as letters any more. she wrote him while she was gone, and hes kept them. admit it, you keep notes and letters from the people you love. "i've given a lot of thought on how to write you back this fall"--kinda showing that all this is going throught the summer, but that they will still be apart after summer ends. "with every single letter and every single word there will be a hidden message about a boy that loves a girl"--so yes, they will still be apart then, but he will still love her and take a chance at it. summer will end, but his love for her wont. then it goes into the chorus again. the fact that it repeats the line "there is" many times makes you realize this song is so full of hope for him. she feels the same. its true love, no doubt.
  • Eric from Springfield, MoAt first I had thought this song was about how he had liked a girl, and he was thinking about if there 'is someone out there who feels just like me'. But now im thinkin that its about like him and his girlfriend are doing fine, but 'theres someone out there who feels just like' him. And he feels sorry that whoever the other person is dident get his girlfriend....if you can follow me lol.
  • Vanessa from Montreal, CanadaI'm totally in love with this song because it reminds me of my boyfriend and expresses exactly how i felt before seeing him again in september...I'm crazy about you Bryan!
  • Danica from Cairns, AustraliaThis song always give me shivers all over, as does the film clip. The boy is just so taken by this girl but is also so worried that another guy out there has developed feelings for her, cos she is just so perfect in his mind. It's really a gorgeous song, beautifully composed and played out by one of the best bands around.
  • Chloe from Hampshire, EnglandThis is about a boy who knows he loves a girl. He hasn't seen her in a while and he hopes she still has feelings for him. "Will you sleep tonight or will you think of me?" He knows he needs her and he can't ever stop needing her. It reminds me of this guy I know and I have loved him since we first dated. Things went wrong and we're still friends but I can't tell him how I feel - thanks
  • Mariah from Miami, FlI miss you Dylan... So much, you don't even know.
