  • The hardest thing I've ever done
    Is keep believing
There's someone in this crazy world for me
The way that people come and go
    Through temporary lives
My chance could come and I might never know

I used to say, no promises
    Let's keep it simple
But freedom only helps you say goodbye
It took a while for me to learn
    That nothin' comes for free
The price I've paid is high enough for me

I know I need to be in love
I know I've wasted too much time
I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's what I'll find

So here I am with pockets full of good intentions
But none of them will comfort me tonight
I'm wide awake at four a.m.
    Without a friend in sight
Hanging on a hope, but I'm alright

I know I need to be in love
I know I've wasted too much time
I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's what I'll find

I know I need to be in love
I know I've wasted too much time
I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's what I'll find Writer/s: ALBERT HAMMOND, JOHN BETTIS, RICHARD CARPENTER

  • Lc from From TnIt’s always wonderful to just listen to The Carpenters music, they both have beautiful voices. Karen’s soft sweet tones are so magical and soothing! It’s so devastating to realize that the world only got to have her for such a short time! Who caused her to grieve herself to death? There should have been more songs!
  • Suzi G from MarylandThis song describes me perfectly. As someone who struggled with eating disorders when I was younger, I have a sad spot in my heart for Karen Carpenter and I feel especially connected when I listen.
  • Randy from Michigan I have always been mad about her ! wish we could have met ! The world will never be the same without her! Still breaks my heart to this day.
  • David Harvey from AustraliaI find this song very, very difficult to listen to without crying, because I can't help thinking about Karen's real-life pain and the sad reality is that she never found any lasting love from a man whom she wanted to have a romance or tie the knot with, most notably her ill-fated marriage to Tom Burris.
  • Anonymous from CypusBeautiful music, beautiful words and the world was a poorer place when Karen C died. R.I.P. I remember crying.....!
  • Ginny WhiteI can identify in many ways with the lyrics of this song. love it
  • Jim from Dover, DeKaren Carpenter's voice finds a way to make the words of this song so much more a feeling rather than a song to me. I know I need to be in love, I know I've "waited" far too long. But if love, really the true kind, involves waiting then what's another few years added on the the 43 already in the books? There is someone in this crazy world for me, she knows it! I have a heart full of good intentions and all of them comfort me each night. I'm hanging on that hope that we'll be alright.
