  • Baby, I get so scared inside
    And I don't really understand
Is it love that's on my mind, or is it fantasy?
    Heaven
Is in the palm of my hand and it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do with a childhood tragedy?

    Chorus:
If I close my eyes forever
    Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same...

    Sometimes
    It's hard to hold on
So hard to hold on to my dreams
It isn't always what it seems
When you're face to face with me

    You're like a dagger
And stick me in the heart
And taste the blood from my blade
And when you sleep, would you shelter me
In your warm and darkened grave

    (Chorus Repeat)

    Will you ever take me?
No, I just can't take the pain
But would you ever trust me?
No, I'll never feel the same...Ohh...

    (Solo)

I know I've been so hard on you
I know I've told you lies
If I could have just one more wish
I'd wipe the cobwebs from my eyes

    (Chorus Repeat)

    Close your eyes
    Close your eyes
You gotta close your eyes for me.... Lyrics licensed and provided by LyricFind

  • Br1mston3 from ArizonaThey got s--tfaced and wrote some words that rhymed. Therein lies your deep meaning.
  • Xombie from FlIve always interpreted this song as being that they are both contemplating suicide over the grief of losing their child.
"Heaven is in the palm of my hand
And it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do
    With a childhood tragedy?"

I got the impression that she was somehow responsible, or at least he blames her, and between the death of the child and not being able to trust her anymore, he wants to end it all with her. She knows, but is also afraid he won't accept her in the after life.
"Like a dagger, you stick me in the heart
And taste the blood from my blade
And when we sleep would you shelter me
In your warm and darkened grave?"

I also think theyre afraid that when they do die together, will they still grieve over their loss as well as not change the fact that their child is still dead.
"If I close my eyes forever
    Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same?"

The only way she can redeem herself, is if she takes her own life with him regardless of it all.
"Close your eyes, close your eyes
You gotta close your eyes for me"
  • Manic Mallory from 15143This song is so dark yet so satisfying
  • Middle Age Lawyer from Middle Class UsaAwesome song, great lyrics

The best part is when she says
And like a dagger, you stick me in the heart, and taste the blood from my blade. And when we sleep would you shelter me in your warm and dark and grave?

Some people think it’s about suicide but I think it’s a little more than that. Maybe two people who really love each other, but the love is fractured, it is almost beyond repair. Where the only place they can truly love each other is when they are both dead.

That’s life player. Wait till someone touches your soul, we’ll talk about it.
  • Brett from Lost LoveI think sometimes we just have to subscribe our own understanding of our own personal situations to a song the song speak to me more of lost love and mistakes then it does death and suicide I think that just reflects How Deeply the love went and how sorry they were for the mistakes they made
  • J Price from West VirginiaI think this is from the perspective of a relationship that is already dead. They deeply love each other, but their love has been fractured beyond repair. "Would you shelter me in your warm and darkened grave"... The only place they can be together in truth is in the cemetery where their love is laid to rest. "You've gotta close your eyes for me"... This either means to be with me again, you've got to let this love die. Or, it hurts that she is hanging onto to her love and if she truly loved him, she'll let him go. rest
I tried to love you, but your hurt and the toll your pain took on you made it too painful to bear. The only place I can love you the way you need to be loved is from the grave.
  • Perry from 77598I doubt the song had any real meaning, aside from subconscious annotations. Back then, it was all about the hook...I love hooks personally, but they need to have a foundation too. Good song, but definitely a product of its time.
  • Pedro Sanchez, Professional Mexican from Chattanooga, TnCLOSE YOUR EYES by Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne what was it about - The woman, either accidentally like leaving a baby in a hot car too long OR killed the baby via "Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP)" or pure neglect killed the baby. And the Man cannot forgive her and is so depressed that he commits suicide soon after. The woman begs to herself and through prayer for her boyfriend or husband to forgive her and he will not and tells her that even if you take your life in sacrifice he still will not forgive her, BTW Has only ever directly asked FORD or OSBOURNE the story/meaning of this song? PLEASE DO IT!
  • George Pope from Richmond, BcMark from Chicago, sort of a "To be or not to be" motif? I can see Ozzy borrowing from classic literature for concepts/inspiration. .. he was very intelligent.
  • Mark from ChicagoI actually interpret this song to have dual meanings, one about love and one about death/suicide. The woman in the song clearly had a traumatic life and the relationship with the man has been tumultuous, and she’s now at a point where’s she’s either going to embrace love or embrace death.

“Heaven is in the palm of my hands and it’s waiting here for you. What am I supposed to do with a childhood tragedy?”

This could be the man offering her a life of love and partnership, but he’s frustrated and doesn’t know how to help her deal with a traumatic childhood experience of hers that puts a strain on their relationship. It could also be death enticing her with the promise of a more literal heaven and stating that he doesn’t show any discrimination or mercy based on the kind of life someone had.

“Sometimes it's hard to hold on, so hard to hold on to my dreams. It isn't always what it seems when you're face to face with me.”

I think the first line is strictly the man singing about how he wants nothing more than to spend his life with her, but she’s made it so difficult that it might not be possible. The second line is him accusing her of telling him lies in their relationship, but it could also be death giving her an ominous warning about suicide.

“You’re like a dagger, stick me the heart and taste the blood from my blade. And when we sleep, would you shelter me in your warm and darkened grave?”

The woman feels like she’s been hurt by the man, maybe even suspects he enjoys hurting her. She’s also offering herself up to death, believing it will finally bring her peace.

“I know I’ve been so hard on you, I know I told you lies. If I could have just one more wish, I’d wipe the cobwebs from my eyes.”

This could be after she’s killed herself, or maybe just after she revealed contemplating it. She’s admitting where she made mistakes in the relationship and she realizes suicide was not the answer. If you interpret it as she’s already killed herself, she wishes she could go back and undo her decision and wake up from death. At this point the song signals an anti-suicide message.

“Close your eyes, close your eyes, you’ve got to close your eyes for me.”

This is death telling her this is it. If she’s goes through with it, there is no turning back and she has to “close her eyes forever.”

A very dark and beautiful song indeed.
  • Radman from DetroitI don’t understand why it says this is the only Top 10 of Ozzy’s solo career. According to Billboard, he has had 18 Top 10 hits, including “Flying High Again” on 16-Jan-1982, 6 years before this song was released.
  • William from HellIf I close my eyes forever song in circa 2014: means that the woman e.g. Heather wants e.g. William to close his eyes forever. Meaning very bluntly that if he truly loves her suicide is suppose to be the preferred way for William to die real soon. I am in Hell so I have already died in the name of many women, and men that I have hurt. Having previously died, it sux being dead. If u love family, friends, anyone in this life... u never
put yourself down. Eternal Damnation is not fun. Being dead since 69' I really never experienced life. I died in the womb. Be murdered, or die of natural causes. Suicide is permanent. It destroys everyone. I am unable to be forgiven by God, or Jesus. Yes, I love this song. It breaks my weak, old heart. Yes, I am overly emotional. I killed many people with my 'lies'...
  • Mark Grant from Natchitoches, LaYears ago, I was reading The Vampire Chronicles Series by Anne Rice, when I first heard Close My Eyes Forever, and I think its human nature to relate such a powerful song to current happenings in life. I remember the powerful effect the novels had on me at the time exploring the fantastical possibilites of an immortal "life" as a vampire; the changes one would experience over the centuries; the imagined romantic relationships with other vampires.... and as I daydreaming what that might be like I heard this song, and it moved me in the same way I suppose it does all of us who are compelled to post in this forum. I thought how fitting it would be to relate this song to the passage of time to a vampire. Maybe one who had spent many years dormant and then rejoined as it were, "the world." By no means do I think this is what the song was written about but to me at the time it seemed like a great fit into the soundtrack for one of the movies that was at that time not yet even heard of.
  • Tomi from Spokane, WaAn amazingly powerful song! I heard it on a classic rock station one day and nearly fell over! I couldn't believe I was hearing this from OZZY and Lita Ford! I can't even begin to say how deep this song seems, so for them to have just come with this during a Jam session is pretty amazing too! I guess when I would think of a jam session, I think of maybe lighthearted just screwin around on the guitar right? Okay, so I should know better, right? A Metal God and a Rock Goddess jamming out. Right, can't be the happiest material out there... They must've been getting something out of their systems with this!
  • Shari from Bronson, FlThis is my opinion on the song meaning... The girl had a troubled childhood, she grew up addicted to drugs. He tries to help her, but is torn between "if she is going to get well" versus "is she always going to be like this" The words "youre like a dagger, that sticks in my heart and then taste the blood from my blade' It is HIM giving her an choice to be sober or he'll leave also, In the beginning of the song she says is it love on my mind or is it fantasy... to me, she's been messed up on drugs for so long she dosent know what is real anymore. her verse will you ever take me? will you ever trust me? He is basically giving up on her and she sees it. the close my eyes forever is her saying if I die would you change your mind will it change how your feeling for me. This is just my opinion.
  • Maki from Moses Lake, WaThis is one amazingly powerful song. Seriously. No 'if's, ands' or buts'. I heard it a few years back on my classic rock station... my first thought of course, was Ozzy?! And then, I started listening to it... the music and the words are just so powerful in this song. Yes, it does suffer a little from 80's clichés but not in a bad way, I think. The emotion in their voices, especially Lita's, is amazing. It almost chokes me up. I will agree with those who believe it was about a close relationship destroyed by betrayal, this time, on the girl's behalf, and so she is trying to ask for his forgiveness but they liken the relationship to death and he tells her she must 'close her eyes' and move on with her life, let their past die...
  • Bob from Somewhere, VaEpic. Just crappin' epic.
  • Andrew from Colton, CaMy parents tell me a story about a boy they went to high school with, he was madly in love with a girl who ended up breaking up with him. Everyday he would drive around the parking lot of the shopping center where she worked playing this song very loudly so everyone would hear. One day he didnt go to the parking lot to play this song, they had found him dead. He had killed himself cuz he couldnt get his girl back.
  • Uno from Ramallah, Israelyou are all high. It's art.

    I love you all
  • Craig from Manitowoc, WiOne heck of an awesome song. I play it every day at least three times or more.
  • Nicole from Plymouth, MaI think this is an amazing song. It was well written. I believe it's about a love that has gone bad. Because soemtimes with love comes pain. It talks about a battle that two just can't seem to over come. Sometimes we just have to let go :(
  • Ashley from Larsoe, Lai love this song i danced to this song for my wedding and it is MY NUMBER ONE HIT
  • Mary Ann from New York, United StatesI feel this song is telling someone, their relationship will never be same (no matter how in love they were at one time). It may still be the same for her, but he is fighting it (knowing he will never forget her). When two people felt they were soul mates at one time, these feelings will never disappear. Not too many experience love --- it is a very rare experience. I only wish everyone could have experienced but I have in this past year and a half. Lies can pull people apart, but if it is true love, it will always be there.
  • Jay from Whittier, CaThis is actually one of my favorite songs because it's one of the few songs where the woman narrates her self as the cheater or unfaithful one in a relationship and is asking the guy for forgiveness. And to be honest when I first heard this song I thought it was about vampires because of all the 80s metal metaphors and similes. In my opinion the song has be dated because of that. I also noticed that people talk about this song as if Osbourne wrote it or as if it were his song but it is actually Ford's song and, even though he received composer credit, I doubt he had any thing to do with writing it.
  • Mike from Los Angeles, CaThis song is a little confusing. What childhood tragedy? It seems to me something happened to her as if see was playing a part in this song and ozzy to-like if they where married.
Baby, I get so scared inside and I don't really understand
Is it love that's on your mind or is it fantasy

Heaven, is in the palm of my hand, and it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do with a childhood tragedy.
I love this song there is something in it.Not to be volgur childhood rape?that what it kind of sounds like kinda. Can she trust him is this just a fantasy.Man iam I looking to far into this?
I grew up in the 80s born in 65 and this was going on alot. I had friends in los angeles where I grew up lots of child abuse.
    Perhaps it was husban abuse?
  • Ruby from San Juan, TxPersonally I love this song even though the meaning to the song is a little ironic due to the fact that it was mine and my ex boyfriends! But i always got confused because when she says he's the dagger that has struck her heart.
  • Mary from Phoenix, AzCalm down Michelle. When you use all caps, it's like you're yelling...at Dawn. She was only giving her take on the song. Maybe Ozzy wants people to see different meanings to his songs and that's why they're so hard to comprehend.
  • Michelle from Moncton, CanadaI HAVE BEEN A OZZY FAN FOR ABOUT 19 YRS AND THIS SONG IS NOT ABOUT A OBSESSED FAN OR MORBID LOVE IT IS ABOUT A GIRL WHO CHEATED ON HIM AND HE IS TELLING HER TO CLOSE HER EYES FOR HIM FOREVER MEANING TO FORGET HIM BECAUSE HE WILL NEVER TRUST HER OR BE ABLE TO FORGIVE HER. OZZY DO NOT WRITE LOVE SONGS THAT ARE EASY TO UNDERSTAND. THERE IS ALWAYS A HIDDEN MESSAGE. I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF HIS FOR YEARS AND MANY YEARS TO COME. OZZY ROCKS AND WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO HIM SINCE YOU WHERE A KID AND THREW YOUR TEENAGE YRS THEN U ARE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD HE SAYS AND BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND TO MEANING TO HIS SONGS. GIVE IT A LISTEN AND REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO IT AS A LOVE BALLAD WRITTEN BY ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SINGERS OR ARTISTS. THANK MICHELLE FROM CANADA
  • Kim from Mishawaka, InWhy do people always gotta find something to put a song down for? I really like the song!!! Ozzy always has and always will sing some of the best songs ever. In my eyes Ozzy will always be the greatest legend that ever lived!!!!!!!
  • Jon from Grand Forks, NdGotta disagree. I think it's about an obsessed fan who offers herself to a rock Icon, and is ashamed at being rebuffed. Not based on fact, of course, but Lita Ford is such a fan of Metal that I think she wanted to do this song as an allegory to groupies who take stuff too far.
  • Dawn from Colonial Heights, VaMy take on this song is that I see it as a morbid love song. It seems like Ozzy is offering her eternal comfort if she kills herself/or let him kill her. I might be wrong but that is what I see it as.
