Subterranean Homesick Alien

Album: OK Computer (1997)
  • The breath of the morning
    I keep forgetting
The smell of the warm summer air

    I live in a town
Where you can't smell a thing
    You watch your feet
    For cracks in the pavement

    Up above
    Aliens hover
    Making home movies
    For the folks back home

    Of all these weird creatures
    Who lock up their spirits
    Drill holes in themselves
    And live for their secrets

    They're all
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight

    Oh

I wish that they'd swoop down in a country lane
Late at night when I'm driving
Take me on board their beautiful ship
Show me the world as I'd love to see it

I'd tell all my friends but they'd never believe me
They'd think that I'd finally lost it completely
I'd show them the stars and the meaning of life
    They'd shut me away
    But I'd be alright
    Alright
    I'm alright
    Alright

    I'm just
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight
    Uptight

  • Patrick from Cheverly, MdThey'd shut me away,
    but I'd be alright

I think this song is about why the f*** not?
  • Hebrew from St. Paul, Mnhere's an idea, we are to proud to admit there is a God, so let's invent a fantasy that there is aliens who will save us from ourselves. The drugs obviously ain't working, so this one has to end up good. "Faith in aliens... yeah... lets do it."
  • David from Austin, Txthis song is about a person that fantasizes about being abducted by aliens to escape the misery of his life on earth (a theme covered on all of ok computer, such as "no surprises" where the person kills himself to escape his miserable life). he dreams about seeing the stars and the meaning of life, but society would "shut him away," symbolizing their closed-mindedness and cold herats. "i'm just uptight" is perhaps a deceiving lyric, since the person isn't truly uptight - he's just different than other people because he wants to find spiritual truth and others don't, so his way of rationalizing this difference is that he's just "uptight."
  • Luis from Ctz,gto, MexicoI lived in Toronto, Canada for a while and I got this album (Ok Computer) on my first winter. "I live in a town where you can't smell a thing, and you watch your feet for cracks in the pavement" And I felt like that alien walking on the frozen streets of TO. Great song...
  • Evan from Philadelphia, PaRed Hot Chili Pepper's cover of Subterranean Homesick Blues is awesome. Check it out
