  • You, with your words like knives
And swords and weapons that you use against me
You have knocked me off my feet again
Got me feeling like a nothing
You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard
Callin' me out when I'm wounded
You, pickin' on the weaker man

Well, you can take me down
    With just one single blow
But you don't know what you don't know

Someday, I'll be livin' in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?

    You, with your switching sides
And your wildfire lies and your humiliation
You have pointed out my flaws again
As if I don't already see them
I walk with my head down
Tryna block you out 'cause I'll never impress you
I just wanna feel okay again

I'll bet you got pushed around
    Somebody made you cold
But the cycle ends right now
'Cause you can't lead me down that road
And you don't know what you don't know

Someday, I'll be livin' in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?

And I can see you years from now in a bar talkin' over a football game
With that same big loud opinion, but nobody's listening
Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things
Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing

But all you are is mean
    All you are is mean
    And a liar, and pathetic
And alone in life and mean
And mean, and mean, and mean

But someday, I'll be livin' in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean, yeah
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
(Why you gotta be so mean?)
Someday, I'll be livin' in a big old city (why you gotta be so mean?)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean (why you gotta be so mean?)
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me (why you gotta be so mean?)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean? Writer/s: Taylor Alison Swift

  • Taylor Swift Number One Fan Lauren Elizabeth from North Bennington , Vermont I absolutely love This song from Taylor Alison Swift , this song is is my number one favorite and I can definitely can relate to this song , back when I was in school I was bullied all because I was different and I had an disability called Down Syndrome , when I heard this this song from Taylor Swift , I completely fell in love with this song , I think Taylor swift is really beautiful and has a beautiful smile I really loved Taylor Swift for writing this remarkable song . keep on writing wonderful songs like this , Taylor Swift and I love you so very much and this song is wonderful song . Taylor Swift is a wonderful singer and if anyone disagrees with me then I would literally kick their sorry butts and I mean it just so anyone knows any form bullying is wrong and disgracefuland words can really hurt and even sting like a blackfly bite , none deserves to be bullied , none bullies Taylor Swift , either wise the bullies will have to deal with me by kicking their rear ends . This song is wonderful and I really love this song very much and I listen to this song and I love singing this song especially in the morning or in the afternoon .
  • Taylor Swift Wanna-be from Markham, OntarioI think that whoever says Taylor Swift can't sing should go walk off a cliff. When I first heard Mean, knowing she always writes her lyrics based on real things, I was unimpressed she even HAD to write the song, because she is amazing at singing and deserves no discrimination for it
  • Alia Derwood from Portland Or This is my favorite song by Taylor ever!!!!
  • Luna from AnonymousFirst:
"15 Year old girl holds hands with her 1 year old son. People call her a "slut", no one knows she was raped at 13. People call another guy "fat". No one knows he has a serious disease causing him to be overweight. People call an old man "ugly". No one knew he had a serious injury to his face while fighting for your country in the war. Re-post this if you are against bullying and stereotyping. I bet 89% of you wont."

    Second:
I really love this song; it has stayed with me, along with all her other songs, since childhood.
  • Kirsten from Kalamazoo, MiI hate this song. Whenever we were fighting and this song came on the radio, my mom used to say that it described me perfectly.
  • Lou from Omaha, NeFirst time I ever heard this song was at my Daughter's talent show in her 4th grade class. One of her classmates sang along with this song and not only did it catch my attention, it was like a gun was pointed at my head. The song deals with bullies in school and perhaps in life. But I see the song in a different way. I feel it is a young child who is reminding her parent that one day she'll be too big for spankings or for yelling. If your a parent who has a child that you sometimes have trouble relating to, or you spank, listen to this song again. It will change your whole way of relating to the child who is growing up and one day will decide to live in the big ole' city and you'll understand you run the risk of losing her love and trust. It was all I could do not to cry watching a 9 year old girl sing a song that could only make me think I'm doing this wrong and need to change before it's too late. Love this song Taylor.
  • Novneet from Tauranga, New ZealandI really love this song. It's stuck in my head.
  • Star from Bestrolls.webs.com, GaI don't like Taylor's songs all that much because they are sappy, but this is great!
  • Hayley from Not Tellin, HiKayla it's stupid to post your 'mean' comment for a song that's all about people being mean. Get over yourself! By the way keep your wrong opinion to yourself!!

  • Kayla from Winnipeg, MbTaylor Swift would write a song like this! Get over yourself! These lyrics are just like her "Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me".. really? Sooo conceited! I really can't stand her! The only reason I looked this song up is because there is a play in my city going on right now where a guy sings this song because he's being bullied in the play and he actually does a good job with it. Her version, I can't stand! Blah!!
  • Karen from Manchester, NhI sing, and my 6-year-daughter does, too. My 8-year-old daughter and my husband, however, do not (they CAN...they just don't). However, whenever this song comes on, all 4 of us sing as loud as we can, "all you are is mean, and a liar, and pathetic, and a lonely life, and mean, and mean..." The first time he heard this song, my husband was aghast: "Did she just sing, 'pathetic'?" We all love this song and the message it conveys.
