Songfacts®:

  • 10cc's Kevin Godley and Lol Creme penned this song about the latter's hatred of hospitals. Creme explained to NME February 7, 1976: "My old man was in hospital for a long time and I had to visit him and I've always had a childhood aversion to hospitals. And it got to me... and that was personal and it was very pleasant lunacy. It wasn't too black. The humorous element but it had some definite."
  • The song was written very quickly as whilst Godley and Creme were writing this tune the other two band members, Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, were penning "Headline Hustler" for the same album and there was a race on, over who would finish first. Godley and Creme won their mini contest.
