• Alex Warren wanted to write a different kind of breakup song for his second album, Wildchild (2026) - one where the couple aren't out of love, they're just out of fight. "In all this time, the only thing left we haven't tried is goodbye," he sings. "I think that there's some power in saying, 'We both tried. And because we both tried and it didn't work, it doesn't mean that we're wrong or we're broken. It just means that maybe we weren't meant for each other,'" he told the Off The Record podcast.
• The vulnerable ballad is about his reluctance to let go of a romantic relationship, but it was inspired by his complicated relationship with his late mother, who kicked him out at 18 and died a few years later. "With the way that my mom and I's relationship ended, and I wish I definitely mended that," he said.
• Warren also has a complex relationship with the song itself. It's his least favorite on the album, but it wins him over when he listens to it. "Every time I listen to it, I love it," he admitted. "It's just the idea of going to the song."
