Songfacts®:

  • Here, Alma sings about getting wasted and having a fling at a graduation party.

We got too drunk, we got too high
Fell in love when we were faded
    Don't make this complicated
You were just one of my phases, oh yeah

It seems the fling was nothing special - just a phase.
  • The song pairs Alma with French Montana. Morocco's biggest rapper tells his side of the fling in the third verse.
  • The song was co-written by Charli XCX. The English singer-songwriter is best known for her 2014 song from the romantic comedy-drama movie The Fault in Our Stars, "Boom Clap." The track was produced by Charlie Handsome [Kanye West, Mac Miller].
  • Charli XCX also directed the video. She told The Fader:

"Alma is a total rockstar. Whenever I've partied with her it's been the hardest, most crazy, partying. Whether it's kicking the DJ off, taking over and crowd surfing a tiny bar in Finland or crashing some fancy LA birthday party and forcing everyone into the Macarena — it's always a totally wild time! It just made sense to turn the 'Phases' video into an Alma-style house party with her, her sister, and some of her best friends, and shoot it all. So that's basically what we did."
  • Asked by Billboard how she first connected with Charli XCX, Alma replied:

"She actually tweeted me saying that she likes my songs! After that we've been making songs and having parties. She totally gets my vibe and she's very real and a good friend, so it doesn't feel like working. She's one of the most talented humans I know!"
