Songfacts®:

  • Ama Serwah Genfi is a Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter who uses the stage name Amaarae. She infuses her Afropop music with a sprinkling of R&B, progressive house, dancehall, trap and rock. This Afropop/rap anthem was her first international hit.
  • Amaarae originally released the song as a track on her debut album The Angel You Don't Know on November 12, 2020. Featuring fellow Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter Moliy, it finds the two singers celebrating freedom, dancing and earning their own money. "The song embodies the mindset and attitude of today's modern woman," said Amaarae. "We're independent, we're liberated and everyone needs to get the f--k out of our way so we can get paid. I love this record because it's genuinely about everything I believe."
  • Amaarae released a remix on September 16, 2021, featuring a bilingual verse by Colombian-Canadian singer Kali Uchis. The new version charted worldwide after becoming a viral hit on TikTok.
  • When "Sad Girlz Luv Money" debuted at #80 on the Hot 100, Amaarae and Moily became the first female Ghanaians to enter the chart (Fuse ODG was the first Ghanaian guy to do it, charting as part of a 2016 remix of "Light It Up" with Major Lazer and Nyla).
