Songfacts®:

  • Anne-Marie has a knack for wrapping the heavy stuff in sugar paper, and "Depressed" is a prime example. It's a song about mental health struggles, postnatal depression, and the exhausting effort of putting on a brave face that comes dressed up in a glittery pop package.
  • The song walks a tightrope between bleak honesty and wry humor, a theme Anne-Marie has explored before. Where "Psycho" (2022) gave us biting sarcasm and a singalong chorus about betrayal, "Depressed" shrugs, laughs through tears, and admits that sometimes she doesn't want to meet new people. Rather, she wants be left alone watching reruns of Malcolm in the Middle.

"I can't help but write songs about what I'm going through in my life," Anne-Marie said, "and it seems a lot of people feel the same. Let's dance and cry and laugh all at once."
  • The track was born out of Anne-Marie's experiences with postnatal depression and anxiety after having her two children: She had a 1-year-old daughter and 2-month-old son when she made the song.

"Getting back into music and being a mum has been really difficult," she admitted o BBC Radio 2.
  • Anne-Marie wrote the song with Gracey (aka Grace Barker), Henry Tucker, and Ryan Linvill. Gracey and Tucker had already joined Anne-Marie in creating the razor-sharp "Psycho."

Gracey had her own hit in 2019 when she supplied the vocals for producer 220 Kid's song "Don't Need Love."

Henry Tucker's other credits include Clean Bandit's "Drive" and Caity Baser's "Pretty Boys."

Ryan Linvill is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who has worked on major projects like Olivia Rodrigo's Sour album, where he contributed to six tracks, including " Deja Vu" and "Traitor." He has also worked with artists like Chappell Roan, Conan Gray, and Dermot Kennedy.
  • Fans first caught a glimpse of "Depressed" when Anne-Marie dropped a snippet on TikTok in August 2025. It promptly went viral, and 56,000 videos later, the clamoring was so loud she had little choice but to release it as a single.
  • The video, directed by Benji Gershon, was filmed in London and shows Anne-Marie smiling through literal pelts of water balloons while dancing down a street.
  • "Depressed" ties into Anne-Marie's ongoing mental health advocacy. She's an ambassador for Mind Charity, The Prince's Trust, and the Trussell Trust, and previously fronted ITV's "Britain Get Talking" campaign. The pop star who once confessed she's "Ciao Adios" to toxic energy has turned her own struggles into an anthem of solidarity, a reminder that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is admit you're not OK.
