Songfacts®:

  • When August Alsina said on June 30, 2010 that he had had a secret relationship with Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, she initially denied the claims, but 10 days later Pinkett Smith came clean about the rumors in an episode of the Smith's talk show Red Table Talk. The actress revealed that she did have a romantic relationship with the R&B singer four years prior, describing their affair as "a different kind of entanglement," while separated from her husband.
  • Alsina dropped this song a week after Jada Pinkett-Smith confirmed they'd had a relationship. He reclaims the titular term, saying:

Entanglements is when you tangled in them sheets
Entanglements, is when you're tangled up with me

The Louisiana crooner also addresses the Smith's marriage. He shades Will Smith's wife by calling her "cold-hearted" for using him to pay back her husband while they were separated.
  • Rick Ross joins August Alsina on the spicy track during which he uses a play on words to reference the affair.

Shawty leanin' on my shoulder, got her questionin' my willpower
Jaded by her beauty, but her reputation real solid

During the same verse Ross namedrops the late rapper 2Pac, whom Pinkett-Smith once dated.
  • August Alsina has linked up with Rick Ross on several previous occasions including when they were two of the five featured artists on DJ Khaled's "Do You Mind."
