Songfacts®:

  • Here, Ava Max sings of her former boyfriend, whom she can't forget. Their relationship had been going well until something unspecified happened that made her walk out. Now the songstress feels torn between returning to him or not; her heart says yes, her head says no.
  • Ava Max wrote and recorded "My Head & My Heart" during the 2020 fall and released it as the first single from the digital reissue of Heaven & Hell. The singer's internal struggle of whether to go back to her former lover or permanently ditch him continues the duality concept that runs through the album.

When angels tell me run, and monsters call it love
My head and my heart are caught in-between

The contrast of "head" and "heart" is another form of duality, reinforcing the record's heaven vs. evil theme.
  • The dance-pop anthem samples the melody of German outfit A Touch of Class' 2000 Eurodance hit "Around the World (La La La La La)," which itself is a cover of Russian duo Ruki Vverh!'s 1998 song "Pesenka." All three songs incorporate the same "la la la la la" hook.
  • Ava Max wrote the song with the American singer-songwriters Madison Love and Tia Scola, and producers Earwulf, and Cirkut, with additional production handled by Jonas Blue.

Madison Love co-penned nine of the tracks on the original Heaven & Hell record, including "Sweet But Psycho" and "Kings & Queens." Canadian songsmith Cirkut is the album's principal producer. He also played all the instruments on the track.
