Songfacts®:

  • The first single from the Rooty album, this song is about a guy who has gone from romantic to neurotic, and the girl is sick of it.

In our interview with Felix Buxton of Basement Jaxx, he explained that he first wrote the lyric from a male perspective: "I used to be your Romeo." He decided to switch it around, so the song became "You used to be my Romeo." Said Buxton: "It's the girl having a go at the guy, but initially it was me having a whinge. I used to be your Romeo, but you're neurotic. So the characters in the play changed."
  • The UK singer Kele LeRoc is the lead vocalist on this track.
  • Andy Hutch directed the video, which features a group of Indian dancers led by the Bollywood actress Divya Dutta. The video is a tribute to Bollywood films.
