Songfacts®:

  • This is a self-love anthem where Beyoncé luxuriates in her black skin. She's had her hard times and has the scars to show it, but those tough experiences strengthened her. Queen Bey has nothing to prove to anybody and is comfortable with the way God made her. She sings:

    I love myself, goddamn
    Cozy, cozy
  • Beyonce sings of her pride in her younger sister, Solange.

    She's a god, she's a hero
She survived all she been through
    Confident, damn, she lethal

Solange can look after herself because she's comfortable in her skin. Beyoncé previously honored her sister in her 2013 track "Flawless":

My sister taught me I should speak my mind

"Flawless" also references the infamous episode when Solange attacked Jay-Z in an elevator. Many fans believe Beyoncé had the same incident in mind for this song.
  • Beyoncé recorded "Cozy" for Renaissance. The album draws influences from disco and house music styles, and this song pays homage to the glory days of Chicago house. Here, she borrows the bass from Chicago house DJ Lidell Townsell and hip-hop duo M.T.F's 1992 track "Get With U." Also, the outro is a sample of Danube Dance and Kim Cooper's 1991 Chicago house cut "Unique."
  • Throughout the track, Beyoncé sprinkles excerpts from trans activist and performer TS Madison's "Bitch I'm Black" YouTube monologue.
  • Beyoncé co-wrote "Cozy" with her frequent songwriting partner The-Dream, Los Angeles-based songwriter Nija Charles (Chris Brown featuring Drake's "No Guidance," Lady Gaga featuring Ariana Grande's "Rain On Me"), Chicago-born house and techno musician Honey Dijon, previous Dijon collaborator Dave Giles II, and producers Chris Penny, Luke Solomon and Mike Dean. "Get With U" writer, the Chicago house music producer Curtis Alan Jones, also receives a credit.
