Songfacts®:

  • BigXthaPlug is a rapper from Dallas, Texas whose real name is Xavier Landum. He released his debut studio album, AMAR, via UnitedMasters in February 2023. "Mmhmm" is a track from his seven-track set, The Biggest.
  • In "Mmhmm," BigXthaPlug flexes hard about that wealth, success, and the high life. But it's not just about the bling; he dives deep into themes like loyalty, ambition, and overcoming the grind.
  • Tennessee producer Bandplay's instrumentation samples The Whispers' 1980 hit "And The Beat Goes On." Bandplay is the go-to producer for Key Glock and Young Dolph, cooking up beats for such cuts as "Major" and "Penguins."
  • UnitedMasters released "Mmhmm" as a single on October 6, 2023. It hit the Hot 100 on December 16, 2023, sliding in at #93, helped by a remix with Finesse2Tymes.
  • BigXthaPlug, Bandplay and songwriter Ro$ama wrote "Mmhmm" during a two-week creative retreat when they stayed in an Arizona Airbnb. Bandplay had cooked up the funky beat in 2020 after hearing "And The Beat Goes On" while watching a movie. But when he played it to BigXthaPlug, the sample didn't register with him.

"I'm a groovy-ass person," BigXthaPlug recalled to Billboard. "Bandplay was playing it and me and [Ro$ama] got to dancing. Bandplay stopped it and was like, 'Y'all know what sample this is?' We was like, 'Hell nah.'"

Still, within 30 minutes, the hit took form.
  • BigXthaPlug asked his friend Ro$ama to pen the song's opening verse.

"I had already wrote a verse - the second is my verse," said BigXthaPlug. "I [told him], 'Write a verse, and if it's good, you could get points and get paid.' A lot of these rappers are using writers. Even if you don't end up the biggest artist in the world, you might be the biggest writer. It made me bring the energy."
