Songfacts®:

  • This was the first track to be heard from Blake Shelton's seventh full-length studio album, and it finds him singing about falling for a pretty woman he meets at a party. It was written by former The Voice season 2 contestant Nicolle Clawson (Galyon), North Carolina born singer-songwriter Jimmy Robbins, and Chris Tompkins (Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away").
  • This may have been the first song to be released in 2013, as it arrived in many people's inboxes on the morning of January 1st.
  • This took only eight weeks to reach #1 on Billboard's Country Songs chart, making it Shelton's fastest-rising single to date.
  • Shelton recalled to Roughstock: "I had an email from my manager Brandon Blackstock, and he said, 'Man, this is a cool song, you need to listen to it.' I did, and I was like, 'Holy Cow!' Rodney's a great singer and it was him singing on the demo and they just did a great job. My only fear was, 'I hope I can make my record as good as what they've done.'"
  • Shelton and his producer Scott Hendricks spent a lot of time working on the track. He explained to Roughstock: "It's kind of a new sound for country music. It's got a little bit of an R&B feel to it and some sounds before it just turns into a straight-up country song about a guy trying to pick up a girl. It's different from start to finish."
  • Blake Shelton explained to CMT News that the album title is all about him getting personal. "I listened to the record several times," he said, "just trying to get ideas, and it hit me as I was listening to it, 'Man, every one of these songs, I either am now or have been in this situation at some point in my life.' It really is true, and that's when it hit me. I said, "We'll just call it Based on a True Story.... It kinda is what it is."
