Songfacts®:

  • This song about trying but failing to move on from a past lover was released as the lead single from Blossoms' second album Cool Like You. Singer Tom Ogden told The Sun how the keyboards helped shape the record's sound.

"We like The Killers who are a modern band that do those songs. And we were listening to Eighties bands like Prefab Sprout. I love their song When Love Breaks Down. I was on Spotify and had a synth-pop playlist and I was listening to that a lot, then I wrote Cool Like You and I Can't Stand It on my keyboard."
  • The song was also inspired by the Michel Gondry movie, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. "It's melancholic and I love it," said Ogden. "I was watching it and taking down the things they were saying in the film. So, a few of the lyrics are influenced from that."
  • The 2004 romantic fantasy film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has been the muse for a number of songs. Other tunes inspired by the Jim Carrey-starring movie include:

"Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" by False Start

    "Eternal Sunshine" by Jhene Aiko

    "Spotless Mind" by Jhene Aiko

    "Love And Memories" by O.A.R.

"Tell Me I'm Wrong" by The Morning Of
  • Producer James Skelly told Ogden "I Can't Stand It" was the best song he had ever written, describing it as "exploding with melody."

"I said 'I will take that,'" said Ogden. "It's upbeat and sets the sound for the album."
  • The song's self-directed music clip sees Tom Ogden undergoing a mysterious medical procedure. "The video was inspired by the film Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. I'm undergoing a procedure to erase memories of a former love," Ogden explained. "The video takes place in a surreal part of my mind, with the rest of the band as the doctors and surgeons."
