Songfacts®:

  • "Give Her That" spins a tale of heartache and loss. Carrie Underwood croons about the treasures her former flame bestowed upon her, the memories etched forever in her heart.

Old school Skynyrd tee that I still sleep in
Your mama's necklace, 'cause she wanted me to keep it
Every kiss, every minute that you spent on me
Every memory, you can't give her those

Underwood lays it on the line: those special things are irreplaceable, unattainable for his new paramour. "'Give Her That' is a story about a relationship that is no longer," explained the country star. "The person's kind of moved on and it's like, 'I've seen who you're with. She's beautiful, she's perfect. I'll give her that. But you can't give her the time that we spent together,' And I feel like everybody's kind of got some of that in our lives, you know? If you're stalking somebody on socials and you're like, 'Yeah they've moved on. Of course, really glad for them. That's great. But I had him first.'"
  • "Give Her That" is a quiet, subtle kind of payback against a former flame. Rather than slashing tires and carving up leather seats, Underwood delicately sows the seeds of doubt within the heart of her ex, orchestrating a scenario where suspicion takes root and blooms before her eyes. The song is a reminder that revenge is a dish best served cold.
  • Underwood co-wrote "Give Her That" with her producer David Garcia, and with Lydia Vaughan ("If I Didn't Love You," "Out Of That Truck"). "It was one of those songs I feel like we had to play with it quite a bit when we were in the studio because it's a surprisingly hard song to sing," said Underwood. "So, we were messing with keys and tempos honestly longer than we probably should have (laughs), but I wanted to get it perfect, and it was just an interesting puzzle to figure out."
