Songfacts®:

  • "Dansons" is sung in French, Celine Dion's native language. The title translates to "Let's Dance," but the song is far removed from a conventional club track. It's a lush, cinematic ballad where Dion sings of resilience, human connection, and movement as a means of survival.
  • Written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, he uses dancing as a metaphor for perseverance. The opening line, "Dansons, au-dessus des abîmes" ("Let's dance above the abyss"), immediately establishes that this is not a song about having a carefree night out. Goldman presents dancing as an act of resistance against hardship, urging us to continue living, loving, and standing upright despite whatever darkness surrounds them.
  • Goldman originally composed "Dansons" during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 as a message of hope for a world in crisis. When the song was finally released on April 17, 2026, he noted that almost none of the lyrics required updating. "Six years later, no more virus, but no need to change a word - the world isn't any better."
  • Dansons pour être et rester droits
Parce qu'on se le doit, pour tous les immobiles

    Translates roughly as:
Let's dance so we can stand tall and stay true
Because we owe it to ourselves
    For everyone who can't move

The lyric carries particular resonance given Dion's diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological condition that causes severe muscle stiffness and mobility difficulties.
  • The collaboration marked a significant reunion between Dion and one of the most important creative partners of her career. Goldman first rose to prominence with the progressive rock group Taï Phong before becoming one of France's most successful singer-songwriters.

His work with Dion helped transform her into a global French-language superstar. Goldman wrote and produced her 1995 album D'eux, which became the best-selling French-language album ever released, selling over 10 million copies worldwide. He returned for 1998's S'il Suffisait d'Aimer and later wrote the 2016 single "Encore un Soir." "Dansons" ended a decade-long gap between collaborations.
  • Dion doesn't appear in the video, which was directed by Maxime Allouche and filmed around Paris. It focuses on couples embracing, dancing, and sharing moments of affection at famous locations across the city. Among those appearing are:

Victoria Dauberville: classical dancer and choreographer, seen dancing on a rooftop with the Eiffel Tower behind her
    Mathieu Forget: Dauberville's partner
    Esther Abrami: violinist
    Lola Dubini: comedian
    Oria: young performer
  • "Dansons" was Dion's first original standalone studio recording since her 2019 album Courage. Although she recorded five new songs for the 2023 romantic drama Love Again, "Dansons" represented her full return as a recording artist following her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis. It also signaled a return to the French-language repertoire that first made her a star and arrived shortly after the announcement of her Paris concert residency, beginning on September 12, 2026.
