Songfacts®:

  • Here, Charlie Puth's heart is all in, smitten with a woman he's ready to declare his own. He's not playing games; he's dead serious.

Come and put your lipstick on my neck and my body
Just to show these bitches that you're mine

Puth wants his love interest to mark him as her own. Everyone should know that she is his and he is hers.

Lipstick on my collar, show 'em you ain't no hobby
You're the one who gets it all the time

She's no sideline venture. Puth's not just dipping his toes. He's diving in, committed, and wants to be with her for the long haul.
  • Puth wrote "Lipstick" with songwriter Jacob Kasher Hindlin and the song's producers, Happy Perez and Pop Wansel. They created a smooth, old-school groove to support the playful and flirty lyrics.
  • Kasher is Puth's go-to writing partner. Their other collaborations include "Attention," "How Long," and "Light Switch."

Texas-born producer Nathan "Happy" Perez has also worked with the likes of Miguel ("Sure Thing"), Halsey ("Nightmare") and Ariana Grande ("Imagine").

Andrew "Pop" Wansel is one of Nicki Minaj's key writing partners. He also contributed towards three of Ariana Grande's Thank U Next tracks, including "Imagine."
  • Atlantic Records released "Lipstick" as the lead single from Puth's fourth studio album on August 18, 2023. It followed Puth teasing the song through his social media accounts, uploading videos to TikTok and Instagram showing how he laid the track down.
