Songfacts®:

  • This shuffling tune finds Chris Stapleton leaving life as he knows it behind and looking ahead to a bright future with the one he loves.

I can be your lucky penny
You can be my four-leaf clover
    Starting over

Though excited by the fresh start, Stapleton acknowledges it won't always be an painless ride.

This might not be an easy time
There's rivers to cross and hills to climb
Some days we might fall apart
And some nights might feel cold and dark
  • Stapleton debuted the upbeat song during a West Palm Beach, Florida, show on October 12, 2019. "I'm gonna try something new out, if that's okay. And if it's not okay, it's my show, so I'm gonna do it anyway," Stapleton joked to the crowd before launching into the tune.
  • The song features harmony vocals from Stapleton's wife and singing partner, singer-songwriter Morgane Hayes-Stapleton.
  • Stapleton penned the acoustic guitar-heavy ode with Mike Henderson. A former bandmate of Stapleton's in the bluegrass group The SteelDrivers, the pair's songwriting partnership dates back to the late 2000s. Their other collaborations include "Broken Halos," which won a Grammy for Best Country Song.
  • Becky Fluke shot the music video during the song's recording process at the historic RCA Studio A on Music Row in Nashville. The clip features Stapleton, his wife Morgane Hayes-Stapleton, as well as producer Dave Cobb and bandmembers J.T. Cure and Derek Mixon.
  • When this climbed to the top of the Country chart dated April 17, 2021, it became Chris Stapleton's second #1, following "Tennessee Whiskey."
  • Chris Stapleton won big at the 2021 CMA Awards. He took home the trophies for Song of the Year and Single of the Year for this song, Album of the Year for Starting Over, and Male Vocalist of the Year. Stapleton performed another Starting Over track, "Cold," at the ceremony.

  • Anita L. Richey from Old Hickory,tn I love the song! Your wife and you are amazing together.
  • Richard Eames from Boca Raton, FloridaA brilliant song and lyrics. I love it so much, I'm giving my wife a Lincoln 1909 S VDB penny mounted in a bezel, and giving myself a real 4 leaf clover, mounted in a sealed container, both on chains to wear every day. This song describes our feeling completely. After 30 years of marriage I cheated on her, and she forgave me. I never knew the depth of the love she has for me, and I for her. I did not deserve her forgiveness. Thank you Chris Stapleton, for writing and sharing this song!
