This song by American pop singer Christina Aguilera is from the soundtrack to the film Burlesque. The singer co-stars in the movie in the role of a young Hollywood hopeful looking to impress a nightclub impresario played by Cher.
The song was written by Christina Aguilera, Samuel Dixon and Sia Furler and is one of three original songs that Aguilera contributed to the project. Director Steven Antin told Billboardmagazine: "I wrote synopses of what the songs should be about before anyone else came onboard. That's how I sold the movie." Once the project was greenlighted, Antin and music supervisor Buck Damon solicited songwriting submissions. Christina said to me, 'Can I try?' and I said, 'Sure, throw your hat in the ring. The best song wins.' She was down for it."
Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler and Australian record producer Samuel Dixon also contributed several songs to Aguilera's 2010 album, Bionic, including the single "You Lost Me."
On the subject of connections, Antin's sister Robin founded the original Pussycat Dolls dance troupe, with whom Aguilera has performed.
Bruce Springsteen wrote "Blinded By The Light," which was a #1 hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The "Madman Drummers" line is a reference to Springsteen's first E-Street drummer, Vinnie "Mad dog" Lopez.
The lyrics for "Mary, Did You Know?" were written by Christian singer and comedian Mark Lowry, after his pastor asked him to write a Christmas musical for their church. Southern gospel musician Buddy Greene later added music to his words.
