Songfacts®:

  • This electronic epic was written specifically for the end of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding PlayStation video game. Players control courier Sam Bridges, who must brave a world transformed by the eponymous Death Stranding. The cataclysmic event caused destructive creatures from a realm between life and death to begin roaming the Earth.
  • Chvrches wrote the song specifically for Death Stranding, thinking of the themes of the game and what it is trying to say. Band member Martin Doherty told the BBC that Hideo Kojima wanted the band to write "a quintessential Chvrches song," but with lyrics connected to the game.
  • Lead singer Lauren Mayberry wrote the lyrics. She admitted to the BBC that she wasn't a gamer when growing up, and sometimes that world can be difficult for her to relate. However, Death Stranding was different. "This game felt a lot more human than normal gaming," Mayberry said. "It's encouraging connection, and community, and working together on something and thinking about the wider world."

  • Trader Jim from CaliforniaMy favorite Chvrches song, even though I haven’t played the game. There is a soulful melancholiness in the face of apocalypse. It’s not hope, but acceptance of what life is. A profound sadness comes over me every time I hear it.
