Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from Here and Nowhere Else, this song of solitary self-discovery also encapsulates the whole meaning of the record. Singer-guitarist Dylan Baldi explained to Cleveland Scene: "It's about taking the various influences and things you've experienced and figuring out what makes you tick."
  • Baldi explained to Radio.com that he chose this song to lead Here and Nowhere Else as lyrically it encapsulates the message of the whole record, which is trying to figure out yourself and what you're doing in your life. "That became very important to me once I released Attack On Memory and started traveling and touring," he said. "It's like, 'Oh, I don't really know much about myself really. I'm not sure what I like or who I really am.'"

"So I really needed to figure that stuff out," Baldi added. "And 'I'm Not Part of Me' is about that process. How important that was for me at the time, for me to get out there."
  • Directed by longtime video collaborator Ryan Manning, the music clip features a female pajama party complete with pillow fights, selfies and the four teenagers playing along to the song on Rock Band.
  • A naturally anxious person, Baldi has felt renewed faith in himself both as a musician and on a personal level since moving to Los Angeles. He told Spin magazine that for the first time, he feels settled and relaxed while he records. "I don't know a way to say this that isn't new-agey," he quipped. "It's what my song 'I'm Not Part of Me' is about. It's about taking the things I've experienced and been influenced by and finding who I am and being comfortable with that."
