Songfacts®:

  • "Fall At Your Feet" is one of those lovely, emotional ballads that could only come from the mind of Neil Finn, Crowded House's frontman. This particular song is all about deep, long-term love - the kind that sticks around even when the going gets tough.
  • Finn had been with his wife, Sharon, for about 12 years when he wrote this song, which probably explains the mature perspective on love. Finn is a family man who has long made clear his devotion to Sharon.
  • Released as the second single from Crowded House's third album, Woodface, "Fall at Your Feet" climbed to #17 in the UK chart and nestled comfortably within the Top 40 in several other countries, including Australia, Canada, France, and New Zealand.

It remains one of the most popular Crowded House songs, along with "Weather With You," "Better Be Home Soon" and their big hit, "Don't Dream It's Over."
  • Neil Finn wrote the first version of "Fall At Your Feet" at his home in Melbourne. He was happy with the chorus, but the verse didn't cut it. Originally it was:

    Fly away little bird
Fly as fast as you can
Don't get in the way of this approaching man
    Because he's insane

They tried recording the song but knew the verse wasn't right. According to Mitchell Froom, who produced the Woodface album, the band took a day to free their minds in the studio, just goofing around with no expectations. Just before they left, Finn started playing something he wrote when he was 17. Froom, with the keen eye of a musical matchmaker, decided that song had the elusive missing verse, which they used."

"I finished the lyrics on the spot and we had it within about two hours," Finn said on his website. "It had a good energy about it."
  • "Fall at Your Feet" has been known to pop up at both weddings and funerals - a testament to its adaptability. While discussing his songwriting techniques with Mojo magazine, Neil Finn said:

"Chords meld atmosphere, and sometimes it's a case of not knowing what a song is about until near the end when things start to suddenly tie up. It's a matter of trusting those random subconscious thoughts. This can seem like nonsense, but I believe it. There's skullduggery and bluff involved too, but people sometimes tell me that the line I'm most worried about is the essential one for them."
  • "Fall at Your Feet" has been covered by numerous artists over the years. Some notable covers include:

Flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook with singer Danny Wilde (2000)

James Blunt (2006) for Chasing Time: The Bedlam Sessions

Boy & Bear (2010) for the Finn Brothers' covers album, He Will Have His Way

Cyril (2024) with singer Dean Lewis
  • The song shows up in the 2010 comedy-horror movie Broken Hearts.
  • Crowded House got together virtually in 2020 to record a live version of "Fall At Your Feet" following the murder of George Floyd, a Black man killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis. Neil Finn released a statement that explained:

"Some of the sentiment in this song struck me as being resonant now in a different way than I first imagined. We have enjoyed favor and felt welcome in the United States for many years... We owe a huge debt to the African American artists whose creative expressions have elevated us with magic, passion and beauty while living with prejudice and injustice that we, as white men, can only imagine and have never had to suffer."

Finn said that proceeds from the new version would be directed to "causes that assist in keeping the momentum for massive and meaningful change, to address this glaring inequity in our society."
