Songfacts®:

  • Running to 3 minutes 11 seconds, this downtempo acoustic track appears on the 1979 Phoenix album. The reference to legal fees implies a divorce rather than a mere breakup. Although it has long been a cliché, it remains true that love is the last to know. Dan Fogelberg was married three times and divorced twice, but as "The Last To Know" predates his first marriage, it is unlikely it was written from a personal perspective.

As with many songs however, the meaning can often be very personal. Around 2001, a female fan from Connecticut wrote: "I couldn't believe how much that song sounded like what I had just gone through. When the gentleman told me it was Dan Fogelberg, I just had to hear more. I went and bought a couple of his tapes, Netherlands being one and, again, I was mesmerized by the music... This man could actually touch your soul!" >>>
