Songfacts®:

  • Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy has been writing songs since he was 16. He developed his folk-pop sound in Dublin playing at bars, open mics and busking.

After Kennedy started distributing his songs to Spotify, one titled "After Rain" got picked up by Discover Weekly – the playlist of songs that automatically appears on every user's account at the beginning of the week. This encouraged Kennedy to self-publish his material on the platform; it generated enough views for him to live off the royalties and fund gigs in America. This song is a track from his debut album, Without Fear.
  • "Outnumbered" finds Kennedy attempting to provide some comfort to someone who is feeling overwhelmed. He reminds them that though they are currently going through a bad patch, things will get better.
  • Kennedy wrote "Outnumbered" back in early 2018 with:

Songwriter Jay Mooncie, who is a frequent collaborator of UK singer-songwriter Col3trane.

American songwriter Scott Harris, who is one of Shawn Mendes' go-to songwriting partners. Their collaborations include the Juno single of the year "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back."

Canadian songwriter Stephen "Koz" Kozmeniuk, who also produced the track. His other credits include Kendrick Lamar's Pimp The Butterfly track "The Blacker the Berry" and Mark Ronson's "Late Night Feelings."
  • The Luke Monaghan-directed video features Kennedy walking around Bray Wanderers' Carlisle Grounds football stadium while singing the lyrics. The visual also features other beautiful landscapes in the Wicklow area.
