Songfacts®:

  • "If We Hold On Together" was written for the 1988 animated film The Land Before Time and plays under the end credits. It's an uplifting song about friendship that plays to the storyline of the film, which finds various dinosaurs banding together to overcome challenges.
  • This song was written by James Horner and Will Jennings, the team that composed another far more famous movie theme: "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. The producer was Peter Asher, famous for his work with The Beatles and James Taylor.
  • The song didn't make much impact in America but was a #11 hit in the UK and was huge in Japan, where it went to #1. It's the kind of melodic ballad that's right in Ross' strike zone, along the lines of her hits "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)" and "Touch Me in the Morning."

She had recently returned to Motown Records and was entering a new phase in her career. Her next album, Workin' Overtime, was produced by Nile Rodgers.
  • The song was later issued on Diana Ross' 1991 album The Force Behind the Power.
