Songfacts®:

  • This is a song about romantic indecision in a club, when Don Toliver finds himself torn between two women vying for his attention. In true Toliver fashion, he's not quite sure who he's going to take home in his "new drop," a dilemma that somehow manages to feel both emotionally charged and opulently shallow at the same time.
  • The title, "New Drop," hints at a slick vehicle - perhaps a new motorcycle, which makes sense given the biker-themed aesthetic of Toliver's Hardstone Psycho album. But really, the song plays out like a nighttime joyride, weaving through the darkened streets of uncertainty with a heavy dose of luxury flashing in the headlights.
  • Hardstone Psycho is divided into four sections of four tracks each, with "New Drop" the second track in the third section, "Volume C: Twin Peaks." The section title nods to the cult TV show known for being cryptic and utterly bizarre. So if the idea of choosing between two people in a club wasn't complicated enough, it's now layered with an extra dash of Twin Peaks-style enigma.
  • Coleman, Wheezy, Dez Wright, Bryan Yepes, and Psymun's production is a bit of a genre-hopper. It starts with a house beat, setting the stage for what could be a pulsating club banger, but just when you think you've got a handle on it, it flips back to the familiar, laid-back trap sound. In the end, it circles back to house drums, closing out with a sample created by Psymun, featuring the vocals of Ruby Mitchell.
