Songfacts®:

  • "Solar Eclipse" is a collaboration between Drake and Don Toliver built around Ella Langley's 2025 country mega-hit "Choosin' Texas." Drake previewed the track in his FOMO short film and accompanying livestream in September 2026 before releasing it as one of four new songs on the deluxe edition of his album, Habibti (FOMO).
  • The song centers on a complicated romance with a woman from Texas, giving Drake plenty of room to drop localized Texas geography. His verse name-checks College Station, River Oaks, Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands, Fort Bend, and Katy while throwing in a reference to former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Toliver, who grew up in the Fort Bend area near Houston, adds a shout-out to his home county, blending tenderness with the city's signature trunk-rattling edge.
  • Drake takes the core theme of "Choosin' Texas" and flips it into a far more explicit direction. While Langley's original chorus tells the story of a cowboy who can't stop wandering, Drake recasts the idea around a cowgirl walking out on him. He swaps out the country twang for the slow, hazy R&B production that has anchored his biggest hits, joining a wave of rap-country crossovers like Beyoncé's "Texas Hold 'Em."
  • The track takes its name from a line pairing two wildly different events at once:

It's a solar eclipse tomorrow and your period hit in the morning

By putting an astronomical cycle and a menstrual cycle side-by-side in the same couplet, Drake ensures nobody mistakes the track for a standard love ballad, though he hasn't publicly explained why he chose "Solar Eclipse" as the final title.
  • When he released this song, Drake was living part of the year in Brenham, Texas, where he owned a ranch. Texas, and Houston in particular, has been a central theme in his catalog going back to his earliest breakthrough projects. They include:

2009 "November 18th": The track pays tribute to DJ Screw's chopped-and-screwed culture and commemorates Drake's first flight to Houston to meet Lil Wayne.

2009 So Far Gone: Across the mixtape, Drake interpolates DJ Screw's legendary June 27th Freestyle and recruits Houston native Bun B to guest on "Uptown" alongside Lil Wayne.

2021 "N 2 Deep" (featuring Future): The track shouts out local spots like the Galleria, Post Oak, Fifth Ward, Dirty Cups, and the Northside and contains a chopped-up guitar sample of Bun B's Houston anthem "Get Throwed."

2025 Raining In Houston (with PartyNextDoor): Drake's previous Houston tribute before "Solar Eclipse," it doubles down on his love for the city's slowed-down sonic roots.
  • Drake's longtime engineer Noel Cadastre was the song's sole producer. Ella Langley and the original writers of "Choosin' Texas" (Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick, and Joybeth Taylor) are credited due to the interpolation. "Solar Eclipse" also incorporates elements of Bun B's "Get Throwed," which features Pimp C, Z-Ro, Jeezy, and Jay-Z, adding another heavy set of names to the official songwriting credits.
  • Drake had dropped hints about his admiration for Ella Langley well before the track dropped. He referred to her as "Goated Pen" on one of her Instagram posts and was spotted in the crowd at her August 2026 concert in Little Rock, Arkansas. He also gave fans an early preview by playing "Solar Eclipse" during a DJ set in Toronto on August 30, 2026.
  • The song premiered on September 15, 2026, during Drake's FOMO YouTube livestream. The original broadcast included backstage footage of Drake and Langley, along with clips of Drake attending a Don Toliver show in Toronto, though the backstage clip was later edited out of the archived video.

"Solar Eclipse" was included on the expanded edition of his album, Habibti (FOMO), released on October 2, 2026.
