Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Corbin has lost his girl, but tells himself that it will be OK, since there are many others out there. By the end of the song, it becomes clear that he doesn't really believe it, and the meaning of the title changes: When you're in love with someone else, everyone else is only a girl.
  • This was written by the Nashville songwriters Wil Nance, Carson Chamberlain and Wade Kirby. In our interview with Nance, he explained that Kirby had the title, and they came up with the twist ending in the songwriting session. "That's a little bit of old-school songwriting," he said. "That's a little profoundness, which I think is missing in songs today, and that's why I started writing country music instead of writing songs in general: I love the profoundness in a great song and in great writers. And in that case he says, 'It's only a girl,' but then, when he sees these girls he goes, 'Yeah, but when you're in love with someone else, it's only a girl.' He's still in love with this girl that he's saying he's over - really he's not."
