Songfacts®:

  • The song addresses the utter joy Jeff Lynne felt playing live at ELO's June 2017 Wembley Stadium show.

As we played on, it came to me
This could be the best night I've ever seen
The whole of Wembley singing along to every little song

He explained to Uncut magazine what made it so special: "I think it was the best time I ever had in music. Far beyond anything I could have imagined. We made it into a film, Wembley or Bust, so I'll always be able to remember. The audience is shot so brilliantly. The director (Paul Dugdale) somehow winds his way to intimate moments in the 60,000 people. When a certain song comes on you see people say 'aw', and they hug and a kiss each other. You see things like that so many times throughout the show. It's just amazing."
  • Audience mics had been set up to record the applause for Wembley or Bust, so Lynne borrowed a bit of the crowd singing "Telephone Line" for this song. He explained to Louder: "I put them in for the atmosphere, because that's what it was really like. When I sang it, I could hear them all singing as well. 60,000 of them! I don't know if they're all singing, but 59,872 were."
