  • "Washed" is a high-energy worship anthem celebrating how Jesus' death on the cross removes sin, shame, and guilt. Drawing on biblical imagery of cleansing through baptismal waters and Christ's blood shed at Calvary, the song declares that forgiveness isn't something believers have to earn, but rather a gift they simply receive.
  • Elevation Rhythm creative director and producer Joshua Holiday described the song as a response to the burdens people carry every day. "The gospel is not an escape from real life. It is the announcement that Jesus has entered it," he told Billboard. "So, we want our songs to tell the truth about the weight people carry, while also telling the greater truth that shame does not own them, guilt does not define them and the presence of God is not reserved for the polished version of themselves."
  • Holiday wrote the song with Mitch Wong, Joe L Barnes and Elevation Church pastor Steven Furtick only hours before it was recorded live.

One of the final lyrics to be written - "Because You took away my shame and nailed it to the cross" - became the song's emotional and theological centerpiece. "We fight for lyrics like that," Holiday told Billboard. "Not just the first idea that feels good in the room, but the truest idea. We are always asking: Is this clear? Is this biblical? Is this something our church can sing? Is this something someone might need when they are alone?"

With that shift, "Washed" turned from a simple worship song into a defiance of shame. Because of Jesus, guilt no longer gets the final word.
  • The lead vocalist is Nate Diaz, a worship leader with Elevation Church's youth ministry whose energetic performance matches the song's message of freedom and renewal.
  • "Washed" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart dated July 4, 2026. It was the youth‑focused collective's first appearance at the top of the tally, whereas Elevation Worship (the "adult" counterpart) has been a regular Christian‑hits fixture since the mid-2010s.
