Badu started writing her New Amerykah series in the mid 2000s and recorded this track, which was co-produced by her late friend J Dilla, on September 19, 2007. She explained in a pre-release listening session that she remembers the date as it's the birthday of her long-time boyfriend and the father of her third child, Mars Merkaba, Jay Electronica.
The song contains a portion of the early '70s funk number "Take Me" by Fabulous Souls.
"Pink Cadillac" was a B-side for Bruce Springsteen in 1984, but after Aretha Franklin sang about pink Cadillacs on "Freeway Of Love" the following year, Natalie Cole covered the song and had a hit with it in 1988.
The Prince-penned "Manic Monday" was the first song The Bangles heard coming from a car radio, but "Eternal Flame" is closest to Susanna's heart, perhaps because she sang it in "various states of undress."
